Lady Redskins bring the heat

LA VETA — The Lady Redskins volleyball team are off to a great start sitting 5-0 overall and 4-0 in league play. In these past few weeks since volleyball has kicked off for La Veta, the Lady Reds have not only won every match, they haven’t even lost a game, winning all their matches in three. The action started off with La Veta hosting a Tri-Meet between Centennial and Primero on August 28. Things started out a little slow as the girls played their first game as a new team. The Redskins let Centennial slip within two points of the win in game one, 24-26. La Veta quickly picked up the pace and finished strong with 25-11 in game two and 25-12 to win the match. The girls held the pace as they took victory over the Primero Bulldogs, 25-12, 25-15, and 25-9. The Varsity girls shared the victory against Mountain Valley with the Junior Varsity team which continues to show great strength and talent for such a young group. La Veta once again took the win in three, 25-6, 25-2, 25-10. The Lady Redskins had a quick rest and then headed east to take on the La Junta Tigers. Both JV, and

Varsity teams saw playing time, and both teams took home one more victory with varsity scoring 25-18, 25-19, and 25-14 over the Tigers. Last week was all practice as the girls prepared to travel to Cotopaxi last Saturday to take on the Lady Pirates. Once again JV and Varsity came out strong, taking the win over their opponents 25-15, 25-16, and 25-19. Seniors Rena Trujillo and Sofia Schneider continue to dominate the net with their intense serves, blocks and hits, both girls scoring multiple points every game. The younger group in junior varsity is showing they have what it takes to play with the big girls as well, showing great talent as they start off the season. No doubt Coach Lessar is proud of her teams’ dedication and accomplishments. The Lady Redskins will have a busy week traveling to Monte Vista on Thursday, Raton on Friday, and finishing up at home hosting Cheraw on Saturday. Saturday’s home game will start off at noon, and concessions will be available throughout the game, brought to you by the La Veta Student Council.
