Lady Redskins back on winning track

 by David Tesitor

LA VETA- After dropping three games in a row, the Lady Redskins found success in Antonito last Saturday, beating the Trojans in three:  25-17, 25-19 and 25-9.

The victory sets the stage for a showdown tonight against the Center Vikings who will come to La Veta leading the league with an 8-3 record and one league loss.  A victory will give the Skins an inside shot at winning the Southern Peaks League.  The Vikings beat La Veta earlier this season at the John Mall tournament and the Redskins are looking for payback.

Last Thursday, the feature game of the week was  disappointing as the Hoehne Farmers came to town and defeated the Skins in four games:  25-14; 20-25, 25-17 and 26-24.  The game also marked the return of Jaycee Day who played her first varsity game since transferring to La Veta last season.  Under CHSAA rules, Day became eligible after sitting out ten games.

While the loss was a disappointment, Coach Lessar said, “We finished the season last year with a 13-4 record, so I’m not too worried just yet.  The girls are learning to work together and there’s still plenty of time left in the season.”

La Veta will play Del Norte tonight at home beginning at 5 pm. The Lady Redskins came from behind to beat the Sargent Farmers in five games late Tuesday night.  See website for full story.
