Lady Redskins at the top of their league

by Melissa Ray
LA VETA — After an undefeated weekend, the 1A Varsity Redskins’ volleyball team is now ranked #1 in the league.
The girls proved that they can take the battlefield on the road just as easily as they do at home when they traveled to Saguache on Friday and beat the Mountain Valley Indians in three sets 25-13, 25-23, and 25-20. The JV also showed their talents by winning in two, 25-17 and 25-10. La Veta packs light and attacks hard, leaving their opponents wondering what just happened.
On Saturday, the Lady Redskins started out by honoring parents. They then proceeded onto the court for their second contest with the Cotopaxi Pirates. The Redskins beat the Pirates on their own ship on September 8 and were out to prove Cotopaxi could not beat them here at home.
Sophomore Sofia Schneider served those beautiful serves that surprise the other team. She had no serving errors and led in aces with 5 under her belt. Rena Trujillo and Brenna Ray also had a great serving game with only one error each.
Rebecca Uebler dominated the back row. Nothing snuck past her. The Redskins sent the Pirates back to the ship with nary a glimpse of their treasure in three sets: 25-14, 25-20, and 25-14. The JV girls had to fight a little harder, losing one set to the Pirates, 25-22, but winning two others, 25-13 and 16-14.
To summarize the weekend, Coach Brandi Menegatti had the following comments: “I thought the weekend was productive. We had several girls with a lot of playing time. They played some different positions and that shows we’ll be pretty strong not only this year but next year as well.
“We are still on a roller coaster with our errors. We play fabulously and then we make errors and then we play fabulously. So we’re working on that in practice; all that really matters is tournament and that’s what we’re after.”
Tournament is in three weeks. The Lady Redskins travel to Sangre de Cristo for a 10 am game on Friday and to Primero for an 11 am game on Saturday. Look for some competitive ball on Saturday as the Bulldogs will want to even the score after the Redskins beat them at home in mid-September.
