Lady Redskins are unstoppable – getting ready for final league games

LA VETA — The Redskins are in a unique league where a total of nine teams will see action against one another only once. The rest are non-league opponents, which do not help the Redskin league standings but affect their state rank. Such is the situation for the Redskins, and this week they defeated another pair of non-league opponents. On September 25, the Lady Redskins played the Mustangs of Kim and handily defeated them in three games by the scores of 25-12, 25-1 and 25-21. In the game, Coach Bree Lessar did a good job of rotating out the starters with the second six in an attempt to give depth and experience to the entire team. Then on the 29th, La Veta played 3A Centauri which brought their JV team. It was still counted by the Redskins as a varsity encounter, and by playing a school which has almost as many girls out to play volleyball as are in La Veta’s high school combined, they had a chance to get experience with what could be considered tougher opponents. They weren’t! La Veta won in three games by the scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-12. The

Redskins have been scheduling those types of games, usually against teams from 3 and 4A schools, and sometimes the other teams bring their varsity players, which is good for the Redskins. They are 12-0 but are ranked number 8 in the state by Colorado Preps and Number 9 by Max Preps. These rankings don’t mean much until the final statistics are posted by coaches later this month. La Veta has already defeated teams ahead of them in the rankings and is only concerned with winning out the league when they play Sierra Grande, Aguilar and Sangre de Cristo later this month. This week, the Redskins will host Jefferson Academy from Broomfield which will bring their A team to the match. Jefferson plays in the 4A ranks. Coach Lessar indicated that while individual statistics are an important part of the game, the team’s focus now is on a total team effort as they prepare for the districts at the end of the month. Winning the next three league games will give the Redskins an automatic berth in the districts and they will not have to play any pigtail games. Lessar said, “this is a team effort and all we are focusing on now is bringing a state championship home to this neck of the woods.”
