La Veta Village gifted again with youth

LA VETA — La Veta Village has again been gifted with youthful energy! SkyView Academy charter school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, has a graduation requirement for their Senior Rhetoric Class students, which involves making a positive impact somewhere in a community. They chose ‘The Village’ and the La Veta Senior community to be the recipient of their effort to achieve the goal of ‘making a difference’.

Recently, five energetic teens arrived in LV to make a difference. They had decided to interview four seniors, whom they had prepared beforehand with written questions, work on a prominent garden area, and carry out clean-up and demolition at the The Village site. What a difference they made. We will now enjoy daffodils and iris on the south side of the building as we walk about town. Four local seniors spent their Friday afternoon sharing their life stories with two team members, and the environs and interior of ‘The Village’ building, were swept, cleaned, and an entire roll-off dumpster was filled with debris from previous demolition efforts. Thanks to their amazing work, we are now ready to host several planned community events, and have organized usable construction items, furniture and fixtures to be available soon, at a ‘basement’ sale.

Board chairman, Jay Davis, and founding director, Jeanne Schwarz, accommodated the team overnight and for meals. The students were: Luci and Tiana Schwarz (Jeanne’s grandgirls), Augie Mohr, and Jonathon Beemer. They were also accompanied by student Tristan Lee, and friend, Jordan Peterson, who briefly helped with the filming and provided camera equipment. Much of the team’s effort was filmed and will be available on a video recording and in a book which will be distributed to each senior citizen who was interviewed and available at ‘The Village’ office. Many thanks to Skyview Academy charter school, for creating an opportunity for these students to make a difference. They definitely brought a positive impact into our community.
