La Veta Athletes Honored

LA VETA-  Redskin athletes were recognized last evening by their coaches for their  accomplishments during the 2007-2008 season.  RE-2 Superintendent, Dave Seaney, opened the evenings festivities, which was sponsored by the La Veta Redskin Booster club.  Awards were presented to team members from football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, golf and El Fandango.

The biggest announcement of the evening came when veteran Volleyball coach, Trenda Howard announced her retirement active coaching.  In her tenure, she has brought seven district and regional championships to Lady Redskin volleyball.

The program opened with a fifteen minute power point presentation of the successes of the teams.  When it was concluded,  athletic director and coach, Don Price, thanked  the athletes “for the most successful sports program in the history of the school.”  These fine young athletes accomplishments the past year were that.  The Lady Skin volleyball were third at state, the wrestling squad had five state qualifiers, football finished 2nd in their league, The boys and girls basketball team were regional qualifiers.  The track team produced 7 individual district champions and additional 6 relay champions.  The baseball team are in the final 8 in the state baseball playoffs.  Both the track and baseball teams story will continue tomorrow as they advance in competition.  The golf team completed their second season and the El fandango dancers were recognized for their athletic endurance.

While all the coaches acknowledged all team members, most were reluctant to name individual members accomplishments because, as they put it, “we are one team.”  They were pleased to announce players who made all conference for their individual achievements.

A special moment came when wrestling coach, Ron Ortivez offered a moment of silence for fallen teammate, Ian Taggart, who died suddenly in the middle of their season.  He then spoke about the dedication of his wrestlers to overcome adversity to finish the season advance to state.
