WALSENBURG- On April 28, 2009 La Plaza de los Leones, Inc. authorized the formation of La Plaza de Los Leones Youth Auxiliary. The Youth Auxiliary will be self-directed with its own officers. Ricardo Bobian was named as the Chairperson for the Youth Auxiliary. The first meeting was held on May 6th with 25 eighth thru twelfth graders in attendance. The students learned about the history of La Plaza de Los Leones, the organization′s by-laws and its mission as an all-volunteer, non-profit, community based organization dedicated to promoting Hispanic cultural awareness. Huerfano County students to institutions of higher learning.
The group′s first act was to elect officers. Dom Pino, 10th grade, was named as its first president.
Several fundraising activities have been planned. A car wash has been tentatively scheduled for June 13th in the Crown Lanes parking lot. The Youth Auxiliary will also have a booth set up at the Black Diamond Jubilee where there will be face painting, kiddie games and baked goods for sale. Look for other possible events including a dodge ball tournament, Guitar Hero tournaments, Teen Dances, paintball and an out-door picnic throughout the summer and leading up to the Fiesta in September.
The Youth Auxiliary has expressed a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement in this endeavor. Please consider helping Huerfano County youth achieve their dreams! La Plaza de Los Leones will have our next meeting on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:30 in the Walsenburg Day Services building located at 330 W. 9th St. All students who will be in 8th thru 12th grade next year are encouraged to attend.
