Joyful noise! Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble ushers in Holy Week with cantata

by Mary Jo Tesitor
WALSENBURG — On Sunday, March 25, the day Christians refer to as Palm Sunday, the Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble, under the direction of Kalima Masse, performed “A Journey to Hope”, a cantata inspired by traditional spirituals, composed by Joseph M. Martin.
The concert, performed in the holy space of St. Mary Catholic Church in Walsenburg, was a perfect launch into Holy Week, the days leading up to the commemoration of the brutal death on Good Friday and triumphant resurrection on Easter Sunday of Jesus Christ.  This week is the center and summit of the Christian faith.
Narrated by Sandy and Mary White, and accompanied by Nancy Nielson on the piano, the interfaith ensemble awed those in attendance with plaintive solos, soaring harmonies, and earthy spirituals.
Members of the group included soloists Jenna Inscho, Jamie Bastello and Sam Mary Bonham, Paul Coe, Dave Messier, Jeanine Anderson and Sue Walker, Amaya Engleking, and Eldaa Bouffartique; sopranos Amy Archuleta, Pat Davis, Irene Heikes, Pat Nettesheim, Karen Tripp and Carolyn Youngers; altos Judy Burrows, Cherie Lowenberg, Kennette Oldham, Kim Schafer, Sharon Vezzani, and Sue Walker; tenors Maurice Heikes, Deb Obrecht, Earl Robinson, Janine Rose, Jim Schafer, and John Stroh; and basses Clyde Burrows, Howard Hewett, Bill Hix, and Dennis Nettesheim.
The next performance by the Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble will be in early fall.  If you are interested in being part of this amazing local group, contact Kalima Masse at amuse@rmi.net.
