WALSENBURG- Jay Crook, 76, former mayor of Walsenburg and former publisher of the huerfano world newspaper, died April 23, 2012 in the Colorado State Veteran’s Nursing Home where he had been a patient for several years.
Jay took an active role as a community leader and had guided the Huerfano Chamber of Commerce for 13 years. First he had served on the Walsenburg City Council as head of the utilities committee before he was elected mayor in 1991 then re-elected in 1993, 1995 and 1997.
Jay took over as publisher and managing editor of huerfano world after S. M. Nations’ death in 1968. The paper was sold in 2008.
A native of Garden City, KS, Jay was born Dec. 6, 1935. He served in the U.S. Army. Then he came to Walsenburg from Holbrook, AZ, where he was editor of the Holbrook Tribune for three years. Previously he had been with the Garden City Telegram and one year in Phoenix, AZ.
Among the survivors are his daughter, Cari Pemberton (Rod), granddaughters Bethany Salgado and Erin Pemberton, all of Colorado Springs, his mother, Marjie Crook, a brother, Ron Crook, and sisters Vivian Huelskamp and Mary Lou Jackson, all of Garden City, KS. Another sister, Rhonda Magnison, is from Ulysses, KS. A special faithful friend survives, Nick Agnes of Walsenburg.
No services are scheduled. Friends and family will have a later celebration of Jay’s life.
