HWJ Candidate /Election Forum set for Thurs., Oct. 9

WALSENBURG — Voters will have the opportunity to hear the views of candidates and the pros and cons on the Walsenburg and Huerfano County ballot questions during the Huerfano World Journal 2014 Election Forum, Thursday, October 9. The forum will be held at the Spanish Peaks Public Library on Walsen Ave., in Walsenburg from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The HWJ Editorial Board is preparing questions for candidates at this time and urges voters to email their questions for specific candidates or questions about the local ballot issues to newsdesk.hwj@gmail.com. We will also take written questions dropped off at our office, 500 Main St., Walsenburg until close of business, (4 pm) Tuesday, October 7. We are seeking specific questions to specific candidates, and the ballot issue representatives, as time will not allow for all candidates to answer the same question. However, if you wish to send in a question marked to a commissioner candidate, or to an assessor candidate, for example, we will ask the question at the forum to one of the specific candidates. The forum format and time constraints will not allow candidates, or speakers to the ballot issues, to take

questions from the floor. The editorial board will attempt to ensure all non-duplicate questions are asked of the candidates. The final selection of questions will be made by the HWJ editorial board. In the event of a change of location for the forum, the HWJ will post the new information on our Facebook page and at www.HuerfanoWorldJournal.com. The forum this year will concentrate on local office candidates and ballot questions, although Colorado House District 62 candidate Marcy Freeburg has confirmed she will attend. The District 62 incumbent Ed Vigil, has a schedule conflict on October 9, but may send a person to represent him or a prepared opening statement to be read to the audience. All local candidates received an email invitation to participate in the forum earlier this week from the Huerfano World Journal. This year’s election will see contested races for seats on the board of county commissioners, clerk & recorder, assessor, sheriff and coroner. Huerfano County Treasurer Debra Reynolds has no declared challenger for her re-election bid. There will also be two questions; one from Huerfano County concerning Imposition of an Excise Tax on Commercial Marijuana produced in the county for export out of the county, and a City of Walsenburg question regarding a Walsenburg sales tax. It will be an all mail-in election this year and the ballots will be mailed to registered voters on October 14, 2014. Voters may drop off their ballots at the Clerk & Recorder’s office, Suite 204 at the Huerfano County Courthouse Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm and on Saturday, October 25 and Saturday, November 1, from 8 am until 12 noon. Remember, ballots must be signed to be counted. Tuesday, October 14 is the last day to submit a voter registration application by mail, and October 27 is the last day to register online at govotecolorado.com, which is the voter registration site set up by the Colorado Secretary of State. Voters may register to vote up to election day, Nov. 4, 2014. at the Huerfano County Clerk and Recorder’s Office in the county courthouse.
