High school shooting averted in Trinidad

TRINIDAD –– Just a week after the tragic shooting at the Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, police apprehended two young teens, aged 15 and 16, in Trinidad who had plans to shoot up their own high school. The police were tipped off about the alleged threats early on Thursday and the local schools were put on ‘lockout’ status, keeping staff and students inside for most of the day until it was determined the boys were not in class. The two perpetrators were arrested on Friday. Police have found that the younger of the two boys had been bullied and had mentioned that he ‘idolized’ three other Colorado mass killers, including Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the young men behind the Columbine High shooting in 1999, and James Eagan Holmes, who is on trial for the Aurora theater shooting. According to Trinidad Police Chief Charles Glorioso, the boys have been planning their attack for a month and a half, intending to carry it out on their return from winter break in January. They refused to release any more details of their plot or to explain how they were going to carry it out. A search of the teens’ homes revealed no weapons, but the boys allegedly spoke about how they could get them. The students face charges of interference with school – credible threat, which is a misdemeanor, and suspicion of inciting destruction of life or property, which is a felony.
