Healthy Village; Healthy Child Consortium

HUERFANO- More than 30 people from Huerfano County and the surrounding area attended the October 3rd meeting of the Healthy Village, Healthy Child Consortium.  This meeting was focused on children’s needs and services. A review of the needs assessment created at the meeting earlier in the year showed significant progress being made some of the needs and challenges identified.  The grant Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center recently received from Colorado Health Foundation will be able to address both physical health and mental health.  As part of that grant, Yvonne Gallegos, Executive Director of Fire for the Nations, explained how that agency will be providing mental health screening and counseling.  They initially will be housed on the RE-1 campus one day per week.  The services will be expanding to other schools in the area as the grant progresses.

The attendees were asked to fill out a brief document outlining services that will be the beginning of an updated resource directory.  The next meeting of the child focus group will be held sometime in January.  The Outreach office is now planning an adult/village focus group meeting for November 12th.  More details will be available later.  Please call AJ Sanchez or Elissa Ortivez, Family Health Advocates at the SPRHC Outreach office (738-2718) if you would like to be included in a mailing list for this important work.
