Grocery store opening delayed

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG- The new First Choice Market in Walsenburg was slated to open next week but some delays are pushing that back. According to Assistant Administrator Beth Neece, at the Walsenburg Finance Meeting on Monday, the store’s owner, Hugh Brown, hopes to open the doors on Jan. 5th. It had been slated to open on Dec. 15th.

The weather has been cooperating in getting outside work done. Painting and installing shelving and getting them stocked are among the things yet to be finished.

Meanwhile, Brown is working on redoing the sign for the store. He had proposed a sign that was 72 sq. ft. but that is larger than the city ordinance allows, which is 50 sq. feet.  Brown appealed to the Board of Adjustment but they deadlocked at 3-3 which meant the request was denied.

First Choice is expected to employ 25-30 people when it opens. Interviews have taken place and some workers will go through training and getting the store ready for operation.
