Gardner Post Office on shaky ground?

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County Commissioners met with Gloria Gutierrez of Sen. Mark Udall’s office about stimulus funding.  Commissioner Roger Cain noted at that meeting that he may need Udall’s help if the U.S. Postal Service decides to close down the Gardner Post Office.  Last week it appeared that the current facility, closed down a month ago because of structural problems, would be repaired and reopened. But a price estimate to do the work is more than the current owners of the building can afford. Now the question is whether a suitable building can be found, or whether the Postal Service will decide to keep an office in Gardner.  The Postal Service has not said it has plans to close down service in Gardner,  but Commissioner Cain wants to be prepared to get support from state and national leaders, just in case.  Cain hopes the matter can be resolved in a positive way and get postal service back in Gardner again soon.
