Fourth of July activities around the region

TRINIDAD

Fireworks are Back in Trinidad for July 4th! After many years of dark skies in Trinidad on July 4th, the City, with the Tourism and Main Street Boards are proud to announce the official return of fireworks and numerous events for the Independence Day Weekend Holiday.

Friday, July 1:

The Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre (SCRT) presents Almost, Maine at 7:30 pm at The Famous Performing Arts Center, 131 W. Main

City of Trinidad Free Movie Night at Cimino Park, 9 pm.

Saturday, July 2:

The Trinidad Farmer’s Market 8 am to 2 pm, will feature Iron Eagle Brass Army Band performing from noon to 1:30 pm plus additional vendors. The market is at the corner of Modica and Convent streets in Cimino Park across the street from International Bank in Trinidad. Join us for a friendly, festive and fun, family (and dog) affair.

Free Bocce Ball all day at Cimino Park

Trinidad State Park programs: Birding hike, 8 am at the visitor center and Ranger talk at 7 pm at the amphitheater.

Sunday, July 3:

Free Bocce Ball continues and fly fishing fun with Trout Unlimited on the Purgatoire River at Cimino Park.

Trinidad State Park program: Beginning geocaching, 10 am at the visitor center.

Monday, July 4:

Central Park Ballpark Opens at 10 am for all day Festivities, $6 Game Admission charged which will allow ticket holder to attend Central Park festivities for the day. Ticket holders will get stamped so they can come and go as needed.

10 am to Noon: Fishing for the kids at Central Park with DOW Officer Bob Holder, Free-equipment provided Noon: Dunk Tank/Bounce House/Games, $1 for 3 balls/$1 per game (3)/Bounce house (1)

Noon to 4 pm: Fantasy Cruziers Car Show

12:30 pm: Bicycle Parade Around Central Park-Show Your Patriotism!

1 pm: Fun Run Around Central Park 1:30 pm: Fireman Spray sponsored by the Trinidad Fire Department.

2:30 pm : Home Run Derby & Pitching Contest, $2 per contest (2) 4 pm: All American Apple Pie Contest Judging, $5 and pie to enter

5:05 pm : Trinidad Triggers Game sponsored by Phil Long Toyota of Trinidad, $6 General Admission

5:30 pm: Watermelon Feast sponsored by Phil Long Toyota of Trinidad TBD: Hay Rides During Game: Hot Dog Eating Contest sponsored by Back East Dogs, $5 to enter

9:30 pm: Fireworks Display, Special Events, and Marketing sponsored by the City of Trinidad, City of Trinidad Tourism Board, and the Trinidad Historic Main St. Board

Due to estimated crowds, and the fireworks fallout boundary in Central Park, organizers recommend that citizens watch the display scheduled for approximately 9:30 pm from the Central Park Ballpark Grandstands, Cimino Park, TSJC, City Hall Park, the Golf Course, or centralized locations to view the display. Friday, July 1:

Nashville recording artists, Fred James and Mary-Ann Brandon will host an evening of Americana music at Deerprint Wine & Bistro in La Veta at 6 pm on Friday, July 1, no cover charge.

Pre-Spanish Peaks Music Fest party at Sammie’s Restaurant, 6:30 pm sponsored by Rare West Realty.

Saturday, July 2:

The Doubloon – AERC Sanctioned Endurance Ride, 7 am to 7 pm. This ride course will be a perfect Tevis primer. Sponsored by Southern Colorado Endurance. Go to: www.facebook.com/events/935318189850171/

Art in the Park 10 am to 4 pm featuring all kinds of handmade arts, crafts, jewelry, apparel, paintings, ceramics, glass, and wood. New this year is a Farmer’s Market and antiques. Music by Tom Munch, 11am to 1pm.

Scrappy Ladies Quilt guild show, the annual show, sale, boutique and raffle sponsored by the Scrappy Ladies will be, 10 am to 4 pm at the Community Center on E. Ryus Avenue. The annual event is free.

4th of July Parade, 10 am on Main Street La Veta Boosters Club BBQ 11 am to 1 pm at City Park

Spanish Peaks Music Festival with Charley Jenkins, Kyndon Oakes, CTR, Kinsey Sadler and Exit West. The gates open at 3:30 pm with music at 4:30 pm at La Veta Airport. Camping on site starting Friday $20/night $3 parking. On line tickets are $20, tickets at gate on day of concert are $25 adults/$12 ages 7-14, under 6 free with adult ticket.

Sunday, July 3:

The Doubloon, 25mi and 50mi endurance ride continues 7 am to 7 pm.

Art in the Park continues 10 am to 4 pm with music by Trudy Price, 11am to 1 pm.

Scrappy Ladies Quilt guild show, continues 10 am to 4 pm at the Community Center on E. Ryus Avenue.

Friday, July 1:

Music on the patio with Marty MacNeil at La Plaza Inn, 6 to 9 pm.

Lathrop State Park program “Bighorn Sheep”, 8 pm at the amphitheater.

Saturday, July 2:

Lathrop State Park programs: “Big 5 Activity” for kids to earn a Junior Ranger badge, 9 am at the amphitheater. At 8 pm, “Wildland Fire Safety” at the amphitheater.

Sunday, July 3:

Lathrop State Park program: “Code breakers hike” for kids, 9 am at the amphitheater.

Monday, July 4:

Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Annual 4th of July Fireworks and picnic 6 to 8 pm, fireworks start after dark. Join us for hot dogs, chips and a drink for $5, live music, popcorn, giveaways and more! Parking is available at Lathrop State Park (park pass required, $7). Please do not park on the highway. No smoking or alcoholic beverages allowed on SPRHC premises.

Lathrop State Park program: Atzlan Southwest Dancers begin at 7:30 in the courtyard of the visitor center.

RATON

All weekend: The 2016 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally in Raton is Saturday, Sunday and Monday, July 2nd, 3rd and 4th at (the former) La Mesa Airfield. Pilot briefings are at 6:30 am followed by balloon ascensions. Music and concessions. This annual, free event is sponsored by Raton MainStreet.

Saturday, July 2:

All About Disc presents The Trilogy Challenge sponsored by Latitude 64, Westside Discs, and Dynamic Discs will take place as part of our Independence Day Weekend festivities in Raton at Whistlestop Disc Golf at Roundhouse Memorial Park, 10 am to 3 pm.

Monday, July 4:

Raton MainStreet presents Fun in the Park from 10 am until 6 pm, Ripley Park, 313 N 2nd Street. Live Music with two bands! (TBA), food, jewelry, art, raffles, crafts, services and much more. DJ/Kid Entertainment: games & contests.

Sunday, July 3:

The Rodeo Dance is 8 pm until Midnight at the Maverick Rodeo Grounds with music by The Rifters.

Monday, July 4:

94th Maverick Club Rodeo will be at the rodeo grounds on Highway 64 beginning at 10 am. Rodeo admission is $10 (Children 6 & under free!) all contestants also pay admission. Information or questions call Lee Bass 575-447-2194 The Rodeo Parade is 9 am with Grand Marshall Bob Funk.
