Follow Pike’s foorsteps in a 4WD!

by Carolyn Newman

HUERFANO- It’s been 201 years since explorer Zebulon Pike traveled over Medano Pass here in the county, but modern-day travelers have an opportunity to follow his path… just not in three feet of snow.

For the third and final time, the Huerfano County Historical Society is sponsoring a Labor Day weekend trip for 4-wheel drive enthusiasts driving their vehicle through several crossings of Medano Creek and exiting through the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Already people from Salida, Creede, Colorado Springs, Walsenburg and La Veta have signed up to go.  Channel 21 (a Fox TV station from Colorado Springs) personality, Matthew Druger, will be along.  Zebulon Pike, as portrayed by Charlie French, will start the group at the 7:30 am pancake breakfast in the Gardner Community Center.  The breakfast and a box lunch is included in the $35 per person fee.  The guided portion of the day ends at 1 pm at the Sand Dunes.  A choice of dates, Saturday, Aug. 30, or Sunday, Aug. 31, is available.

A registration form is available here in the Huerfano Journal. A complete brochure is available in the library or by calling Carolyn Newman 738-2840.
