Flags for Memorial Day

by Brian Manning

WALSENBURG — The American Legion Post 16 in Walsenburg will be placing flags on the graves of veterans in Huerfano County in observance of Memorial Day. Members of the legion will begin this on Saturday, May 21st which is Armed Forces Day, a day that was established by President Harry Truman for the purpose of honoring our active duty military personnel.

Legion members will be placing flags in as many cemeteries as possible depending on their available manpower. In addition to placing flags, members of American Legion will also be removing worn and tattered flags for retirement at an observance after the Memorial Day Services on May 30th in LaVeta.

If anyone has a family member who needs a flag for a specific grave, please call Commander Ed Wolahan at 719-738-9969. If possible, he will arrange for a flag to be placed at that location.

Any veteran wishing to join the American Legion should also call Ed or attend a monthly meeting on the third Tuesday.
