Fitzgerald announces bid for La Veta mayor

LA VETA — Jerry Fitzgerald will begin petitioning voter support in a bid for mayor of the Town of La Veta in the municipal election on April 3, 2012.
Jerry was appointed as a Town Trustee in July, 2011 to fill a vacancy on the Town Board. He has been a resident of Huerfano County since 1985 when he and his wife JoVonne acquired and relocated a small manufacturing company from Denver to Walsenburg. During the succeeding 25 years, Quest Enterprises, Inc. expanded sales of its fire protective clothing nationwide and earned the distinction of being the first business in southern Colorado to achieve ISO 9001 certification for its quality management system. With the anticipated retirement and the sale of the business in 2009, the Fitzgeralds purchased a home in La Veta.
Jerry’s introduction to local government came last summer when the resignations of the Town Clerk and Deputy Clerk prompted him to lend a hand to ensure town business would not be interrupted. Jerry serves on the water/sewer, personnel, and finance committees; on the task force for the 3 mile plan; and most recently on the steering committee for a potential creative district in La Veta.
A Colorado native, Jerry was born at Fitzsimmons Army hospital in Denver just 10 months before his father was killed in action in Italy. Jerry lived in Brighton, Rifle, and Canon City before earning a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Colorado State University. After four years in the army, finishing his service as a Captain in Vietnam, he returned to Colorado to begin his career as a CPA, financial services executive and business owner.
Jerry believes the job of mayor requires the type of experience he has to offer and the ability to devote the necessary time to the task. While a relative newcomer to La Veta, Jerry is no stranger to this community. His second dad, Don Young, was the first state district forester for Southern Colorado, so Jerry’s appreciation of the beauty and serenity of this valley goes way back. He says, “I am constantly impressed with the civic pride and citizen involvement in the La Veta community.”
