WALSENBURG — Smoke and flames could be seen in Fiesta Park on Thursday as the Huerfano County Fire Department conducted a training burn in preparation for wildland fire season. The drill was conducted by fire chief Gerald Jerant andlieutenant Fred Partee. They followed a plan to make sure all firefighters worked safely, the fire remained under control, ensure the wind was not a factor, and put hose lines in place so fire would not spread or cause damage to exposures. In addition to the event being a training opportunity, they removed dry brush that could have caused problems in the future. These dedicated volunteers do this on their own time for no pay. We should all thank them.
