Fire danger precautions

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG-    The dry winter has sparked fires up and down the front range of Colorado prompting the Huerfano County Commissioners to ask citizens to be careful and promote fire prevention. They have not yet considered a fire ban but may consider one very soon. In the meantime, Commissioners ask that residents in the County be careful in burning trash, ditch burning and other activities that could spark a fire. While water levels continue to hold strong across much of the state, dry, windy conditions have persisted for most of January and February.

Jonas Landes of Colorado Preservation Inc. gave a presentation to the Commissioners dealing with how his firm can handle the endangerment of facilities like the old power plant. It has been deemed as one of the most endangered buildings by Colorado Preservation Inc. Meetings on what can be done to the facility are on-going at this time.

Brent and Maria Berger of the Museum of Friends gave a short slide show on an exhibit they would like to bring to Walsenburg by renowned artist, Eddie Dominguez. The Museum of Friends would like to have part of the exhibit at their museum and other parts at the County courthouse. The Commissioners are open to the art exhibit but are not sure what monies they could contribute to bring the exhibit here. The Bergers were asked to widen their range of people and companies that they seek support from. They need around $9,000 to make it happen. The exhibit would be here for a couple of months. Commissioner Bobian said, “Art education is important.”
