GARDNER — The Week of the Young Child is April 16-19. On Monday of this week, the children will be going to the Spanish Peaks Library District for literacy enrichment with Sherry Pearson. They will get to listen to stories and develop an interest and love for reading!

On Wednesday, the children will get to visit the Gardner fire station to learn about fire safety and the fire trucks with the Upper Huerfano Fire District firefighters. Cindy Gutierrez, from the Spanish Peaks Ambulance, will also be there to inform the children about what EMS responders do for the community.
On Thursday, the students will get a visit from Cathy Montera, from the Huerfano County Health Department, to teach them about oral health. They will learn how to take care of their teeth and gums, as well as what can happen if you don’t! Gardner school staff is very appreciative of the people in the community who give their time to help educate the young children during this special week that was created to honor young children.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Pinwheels are used as the national symbol for child abuse prevention. Gardner school will create a pinwheel garden in order to bring awareness to child abuse prevention in our community. Be on the lookout for other pinwheel gardens in Huerfano County! Help support this awareness by putting a pinwheel in your place of business or front yard.
