Fair Board considers changes to rodeo

by Carol Dunn

LA VETA- At its meeting on February 24, the Huerfano County Fair Board discussed using the New Mexico Rodeo Association to sanction the July 4 rodeo event.  Reportedly, working with the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) has become very expensive and results in the Board taking a loss each year on the rodeo.  It is not yet known whether Colorado will co-sanction the rodeo and recognize the points earned by the entrants.  The Board also discussed changing stock contractors.

Justin McCay told the Board that he is working on a list of sponsorship levels for businesses who want to help with the July 4 rodeo.  Sponsorships would range from a 2×4 sign to “buying” an event, paying stock contractor fees, or even possibly a mud-bog sponsorship.

The Board approved the use of the fairgrounds building in La Veta for the following events in 2009: April 17, 4-H talent show; April 30, FFA banquet; May 17, CSU Extension Goat Day; June 6-9, Rodeo Bible Camp; August 22, Lucero wedding reception.
