Scholarship drawing for vaccinated students

OUR WORLD  —  The Colorado Community College System (CCCS), in partnership with Amazon, has announced the “Shot at a Scholarship” program. The Foundation for Colorado Community Colleges will award two full-tuition scholarships of $5,000 along with five $1,000 scholarships at each of the System’s 13 colleges to students who are enrolled and attest to being fully vaccinated by mid-September. In total, CCCS and Amazon will award 67 scholarships to community college students.  This includes Trinidad State.
Scholarships will be awarded via a drawing and recipients will be recognized as Amazon Scholars. Students may register for the drawing anytime between July 21, 2021 and September 15, 2021, at cccs.edu/shot-at-a-scholarship/. All students who register by the deadline and are enrolled as of September 15th will be entered in the drawing and will be notified by September 20th if they receive a scholarship.

Stonewall Century Ride

OUR WORLD  —  Register for the 18th Annual Stonewall Century Ride, Saturday, August 14. The Stonewall Century is a challenging 102-mile out-and-back road bike ride along Highway 12, the scenic Highway of Legends, from La Veta to Segundo and back. Turn around wherever you like. Fox Walsenburg weekend movie

WALSENBURG – This weekend at the Fox in Walsenburg, Black Widow will be playing again, but there will also be a free special presentation of the classic horror film Scream on the inflatable screen at the Golf Course on Saturday at 9 p.m.
Black Widow  is rated PG-13, Action, Adventure, and Sci Fi, and it will play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. There will be no Saturday showing at the Fox, since everyone will be preparing for the outdoor screening of Scream. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for students, and $5 for children aged 5-12.

Youth Sports League Soccer Sign-ups

HUERFANO COUNTY —  For Ages 4-12. Register August 2-August 30 at Two Peaks Fitness, 216 S Main St in La Veta, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday-Saturday.
Practice begins the week of September 13, with games starting the week of September 27.
Evening registration also available August 17 & 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Two Peaks Fitness in La Veta and SCCY in Walsenburg.
Cost $35-$40 based on age; discounts available for families registering more than one child. Scholarships available.

School supply drive at Lathrop State Park

HUERFANO COUNTY — Lathrop State Park is sponsoring a “Back to School Supply Drive” from July 19th to August 15th. You can donate notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, color pencils, backpacks, dry erase markers, folders, clorox wipes, boxes of tissues, etcetera.
There are three drop off locations:
Lathrop State Park at 70 County Road 502 in Walsenburg.
SPRHC / Hospital at 23500 US 160 in Walsenburg.
JM Tire at 928 Main Street in Walsenburg.

Fun Fridays Field Trips

HUERFANO COUNTY — Field Trips for kids on Fridays. All kids are welcome to join; maximum of 15 kids/activity.
Cost: $10 for children of gym members, $15 for non-members.
Registration must be completed the Wednesday prior to each activity for logistics planning.
Drop-offs at Two Peaks Fitness at 8:45 a.m. the morning of each activity.

HUERFANO COUNTY —  Join Design Age Friendly and The Mindful Aging Project in helping to make Huerfano County more Age Friendly by attending this free workshop on Thursday July 29, from 11 to 1 p.m. at the Museum of Friends – 600 Main St, Walsenburg, CO 81089
These free intergenerational workshops are an opportunity for people of all ages (and we mean ALL ages so if you’re preggos, bring that baby down), to roll up their sleeves and have fun while chiming in on what makes Huerfano an Age Friendly Community.

Grand Finales of Fridays in Huerfano

HUERFANO COUNTY — Celebrate the end of the Fridays in Huerfano program with us July 30 from 4 to 8 p.m.! At Miner’s Plaza in Walsenburg we will have a beer garden, live painting, live music, a tiny home exhibit, art cars, live music, and a vaccine clinic! Dynamix will go on at 6 p.m.! In La Veta we will have two stages of music and live painting! Graham Davis will be on the Deerprint stage and Ted Dirks will be on the Casa De Pajaros patio starting at 6!

Lathrop State Park Events

HUERFANO COUNTY — In addition to the Navajo storytelling and silversmithing events that are detailed in the event listing below, there will be a few Junior Ranger Programs this weekend, as well as a performance of celtic music by local legends Willson & McKee at the amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. , Saturday, July 31.
The Junior Ranger activities will take place between Thursday July 29 and Saturday, July 31. On Thursday at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Nature Scavenger Hunt starting at the amphitheater. On Friday at 1:30 p.m. there will be a wildflower hike and drawing event starting at the swim beach. On Saturday, there will be junior silversmithing at 1:30 p.m. at the visitors center with Special Guest Ravis Henry.

Navajo/Diné Storytelling and Navajo Silversmithing

HUERFANO COUNTY — Join Special Guest Ravis Henry at Lathrop State Park on July 30  and 31 for a weekend of passing on of traditional knowledge. Ravis Henry is a member of the Diné/Navajo Tribe belonging to the Towering House Clan, born for the Coyote Pass Jemez Clan. His maternal grandfathers are of the the Salt People Clan and his paternal grandfathers of the Tangle People Clan. Ravis has generational roots in the beautiful Canyon de Chelly.
Over the course of the weekend, Ravis will introduce visitors to the Diné/Navajo Worldview of Balance and Harmony, Hózhó Naashá.

LVFPD Taco Fundraiser

LA VETA — Let’s Taco ‘bout our fire district. Join us for a taco dinner fundraiser in support of the La Veta Fire Protection District on Saturday, July 31 at 6 p.m. at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile at 1120 Panadero Avenue, Cuchara CO 81055.
There will be a taco bar dinner, live music by Kurt Corsair, nachos, drinks, and prizes. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for children, and are free for kids aged 5 and under. All proceeds will benefit the LVFPD.

WALSENBURG — Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare is offering an animal vaccination clinic on July 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 306 Ray Sandoval Blvd. in Walsenburg. For more information, call 719-890-2777.

Flood preparation planning

LA VETA — If you are a La Veta resident with a home west of Birch St. you need to have a plan. The Personal Emergency Preparedness Workbook will guide you in developing your plan.
Workbooks are available at Town Hall and the La Veta Public Library. Supplies are limited. They are intended for La Veta residents living in the flood zones west of Birch St. Please take one workbook per household.
Questions? Town Trustee, Tim Tady, will be at the La Veta Library Saturday, 31, July from 10 to 11 a.m. to answer any questions.

Registration for JMHS

WALSENBURG – Registration for John Mall High School will take place on Tuesday, August 3rd and Wednesday, August 4th this year. Be sure to come in between 9:00a.m – 12:00p.m. or between 1:00p.m. – 4:00p.m.

Apes, Anthropology at La Veta Public Library

LA VETA — The La Veta Library will proudly host Sam Struters on August 5th at 1 p.m. (please note the new time) in the upstairs meeting room. Sam has a Ph.D in anthropology,has worked in occupational therapy and has a decade of experience working with apes in captivity at a Primate Research Center where she was the Director of Behavioral Sciences.
Her highly acclaimed book, Chimpanzee Voices: A Stranger in a Culture of Chimpanzees, from which she will read excerpts, is a memoir, analysis and critique of our dealings with others-human or not. She will relay the stories of individual chimpanzees who were used in research and examine the ethics of animal research from a very personal level. She will also discuss how this research enabled us to find a vaccine for COVID so rapidly.    This guaranteed to be an interesting, thought provoking program that you will not want to miss.  For more info call LVPL 719-742-5278.

Grand Opening of New Huerfano Judicial Center

WALSENBURG  — The grand opening of the new Huerfano County Judicial Center will take place on Friday, August 6th at 1:30p.m. Refreshments will be served immediately after the ceremony.

Huerfano Mining Museum

HUERFANO COUNTY — Free admission to the Walsenburg Mining Museum will be part of the Judicial Center’s dedication Aug. 6 on West Fifth Street, Walsenburg.  The Museum is next door to the Center, in the old 1896 county jail.  In contrast to the old cells and bullpen, the 2021 visitors are more up-to-date and finding the Museum by using their smart phones and searching for Walsenburg attractions.
Limited open hours this summer are Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Unfortunately the mountain rains have made the roads for the Taos Trail Tour, scheduled for Aug. 28, impossible to navigate.  Instead, a walking tour of Walsenburg’s South Main Street area will be scheduled for Aug. 28.  This tour will involve about six blocks and two to three hours with reenactors at each historic site.  Cost will be $15 adults, children 12 and under free. UPPER HUERFANO — On Saturday, August 7th from 1:00p.m. – 3:00p.m., the Upper Huerfano Fire Protection District in connection with the Spanish Peaks Alliance for Wildfire Protection will hold an open house and BBQ at the Gardner Fire Protection District. This is an open invitation to all residents of the Upper Huerfano Fire Protection District!

Dog Days of Cuchara

CUCHARA — The Dog Days of Cuchara event will take place on August 7th from 11 a.m to 3 p.m followed by a Corn Hole Tournament at the Dog Bar & Grill.
Join us for an all day doggy street party on Main Street in Cuchara! Enjoy big dog and little dog races, an obstacle course, scavenger hunts, yard games, vendor booths, music and more. New additions this year include: a bake sale fundraiser for Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association, dunk tank benefiting the La Veta Fire Auxiliary, dog adoptions through From Forgotten to Forever, and doggy vaccines available through Dr. Hecht on site! Don’t forget the Corn Hole Tournament at the Dog Bar and Grill after the street party. See you for a dog-gone good time!

JMHS Volleyball 4 on 4 Tournament

WALSENBURG – On Saturday, August 7th, there will be a 4 on 4 volleyball tournament taking place at John Mall High School. There is a women’s division and a co-ed division with a maximum number of 5 per team. The cost of entry is $100 per team and all proceeds will benefit the JMHS Volleyball team. Free Legal Help Clinic

HUERFANO COUNTY — Despite the COVID-19 closures of libraries across Colorado, the Virtual Pro Se Clinic (VPC) clinics will still be held as scheduled.  As a work-around, instead of clinic patrons coming in-person to your local public library (which may have limited access), the volunteer attorney will call each clinic patron’s telephone directly, during the clinic hours, using the phone number provided.

Sean Harrison performance at Deerprint Wine Bistro

Collaboration, Tangents, Confluence – 30 Years of Art

WALSENBURG – The Museum of Friends is honored to present artists Joe Slusky and Katie Hawkinson who have worked together in collaboration since 1991. For this project, MoF recreates in the main gallery a 25 x 8-foot California book store construction facade on which both artists created the painting on exhibit. This major work will be embellished by other projects both joint and singular in which each artist is showcased. Opening Friday, August 13th, all are invited, please come meet the artists who will be present to answer any questions. Huerfano area AA and NA meetings

HUERFANO COUNTY — AA in Walsenburg meets Tuesday and Friday, at 7 p.m. at the Church of Christ, across the street from the Spanish Peaks Library.
In  La Veta, AA will meet on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. in La Veta at the Methodist Church on Main St.
NA meets Saturday at noon at the Huerfano Community Center.

Vendors wanted for ArtoCade 2021

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — Calling all former and possible new vendors! ArtoCade 2021 is happening this year on Saturday, September 11th and it will be a great opportunity to sell your goods or get the word about something important you care about.
Setup is at 8:00a.m., the parade is at noon, and teardown will take place at 4:00 or 5:00p.m., depending on the crowds, so there will be ample opportunity for folks to see your booth.

Community Health Needs Assessment

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — Mt. San Rafael is working to complete their Community Health Needs Assessment; an important tool, completed every three years, that identifies key health needs and issues through systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis.
A Community Health Needs Assessment gives organizations, like Mt. San Rafael Hospital, comprehensive information about the community’s current health status, needs, and issues. This information helps develop a community health improvement plan by justifying how and where resources should be allocated to best meet community needs.
To assist with this process is a community survey.  The survey asks about health, current health practices, and impressions of the overall health of the Trinidad community.  The survey is available in both English and Spanish and in paper form or electronic. First National Bank School Supply Drive

TRINIDAD — Our students need your help! Every year First National Bank gives the community an opportunity to support the youth in our community by holding an annual school supply drive. This year they are asking for cash donations to purchase supplies for Back to School. First National Bank will match the first $1000 in donations. Please consider making a donation for the betterment of the children of our community. In order to do so, drop off or mail your donations to any branch location by July 31.

Aguilar Street Festival & Car Show

AGUILAR — On August 7th from 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. there will be a whole host of activities taking place in Aguilar. The day will kick off with a Parade and Car Show at 10:00a.m. (for which you can register “day of’ at 9:30a.m.) with Trophies and Awards at 2:00p.m. There will be face painting, a bouncy house, piñatas, game booths, prizes, live music, Craft and Food Vendor booths, a beer garden, and the Grand Opening of the Aguilar Mercantile. The event is rain or shine.

Aguilar Library Celebrates Aguilar Days

AGUILAR — On Saturday, August 7, from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the Aguilar Public Library will be hosting a set of events in celebration of Aguilar Days.
Activities will include face painting and the popular “Bag of Books” event, during which you can fill a bag with books, recipes, crafts, DVDs, etcetera for only $5. Bag of Books will continue until August 31st!

Services at Little Rock Church on Johnson Mesa

COLFAX COUNTY— Services will continue at the Little Rock Church on Johnson Mesa! There will be further services starting at 2:30 p.m. on August 1st and August 8th.
On August 1st, Pastor Bob Clevenger from the Assembly of God Church in Springer will deliver the message.
On August 8th, the message will be delivered by the Associate Pastor/Youth Leader Ben Campbell from the First Baptist Church in Raton.

Sugarite Canyon State Park Events
COLFAX COUNTY— This weekend, travel back in time and beyond the furthest reaches of our solar system with the wonderful programming provided for you at the Sugarite Canyon State Park.
On Friday, July 30th at 7:00p.m. at the Soda Pocket Amphitheater, join Jared Chatterly for ‘Gunfighters and Ghosts,’ a rip-roaring, spine tinging night of unforgettable stories from the Old West.
On Saturday, July 31st, there are three different events. At 9:00a.m., you can have Coffee with a Ranger at the Lake Alice Campground. Free coffee, doughnuts, and conversation.
Later, at 8:00p.m., rocket from Earth to the edge of the Universe with Ranger Ricks at the Soda Pocket Amphitheater in ‘Peanuts to Space…the Milky Way and Beyond.’

Annual Picnic Johnson Mesa Church

COLFAX COUNTY— The Annual Picnic will be Sunday, August 15th starting at noon and followed by a worship service with the message by Monte McGowen, Pastor of the Lighthouse Church in Raton.

Raton AA meeting

RATON — AA meetings are every Sunday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Friday night, at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at 4th and Tiger Drive in Raton.  Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
