County unveils plan for Fiesta Park

by Larry Patrick
HUERFANO — Huerfano County Administrator John Galusha held a community meeting last week to detail county plans to make changes to Fiesta Park.
The meeting was a necessary part of applying for a grant to Great Outdoors Colorado by Aug. 29. If the application is successful, the grant would be awarded in December of this year.
Galusha said lighting at the softball field and a new scoreboard are definite projects. Also being considered are plans for a T-ball field, closing of E. 9th street leading into the park (must be approved by the City of Walsenburg), soccer fields, a dog park, kids’ playground, expansion of the community gardens, additional parking and closing off the roads at the rear area of the park to allow for more walking trails, picnic areas, and so on.
The county has plans to budget $70,000 for the projects next year and is also working with the Huerfano County Parks and Recreation District to help fund some of the improvements.
Galusha gave the 25 people in attendance a tour around the park to show what improvements and changes could be made. He was seeking input on what the public would like so that can be included in the grant application.
The current improvements are designed for the outside areas of Fiesta Park. Galusha said the county would also like to consider projects like a full-size indoor swimming pool, indoor exercise areas and more within the next two to three years.
