Mann found dead

CUCHARA- Local resident Douglas Mann, 54, was found dead on the grounds of the Cuchara Ski Resort on Monday.  An investigation as to the cause of death is ongoing. obituary.

Pinon Canyon: Evening of Awareness

LA VETA- On Thurs. Mar. 20 there will be an event to inform the public about the Army’s plans to take an additional 415,000 acres of southeastern Colorado for expanding its live ammunition maneuver site.  Presently the Army has 212,000 acres in Las Animas County;  the expansion will affect both Las Animas and Huerfano Counties.  All county governments in Southern Colorado have opposed the expansion – including Huerfano.  Representatives from the Pinon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition will present the current status of the Army’s plans at this Awareness Evening.  Music will be provided by Willson & McKee and Brent and Babz. 

    The event takes place at The Parkside on Ryus Street in La Veta and starts at 7 pm.  The presentations will occur at approximately 7:20 and 8:10.    Everyone is invited to enjoy some music and become better informed about the Army’s plans which will affect the region for generations to come.

 SPACe minis & more

LA VETA- The Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe) invites area artists working in any media to enter the upcoming miniature show:  Great Things in Small Packages. Bring artwork to the SPACe Gallery in the Park, 132 W. Ryus in La Veta between noon and 2 pm Sunday, March 16. Artwork must be smaller than 12" x 12", including the outside of the frame. Three dimensional work must be smaller than 12" x 12" x 12."  Artists may enter up to 6 pieces. The entry fees are $10 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry which help defray operating expenses.     In other SPACe news, area artists who are interested in taking part in the 2008 Studio and Gallery Tour in La Veta are asked to send the following information to SPACe Studio Tour, P.O. Box 419, La Veta, CO 81055.  Artist′s name, mailing address, phone, email, type of artwork or medium, and the $20 fee. Checks should be made out to SPACe.  The Tour will be held Aug. 2 & 3, 9 am – 4 pm both days. Brochures, maps, and signs will be available to direct visitors on the self-guided tour. Artists who don′t have studios may be able to share spaces with other artists who do, so indicate if this would be needed. For questions contact Mary Jean at 742-5763.

Museum of Friends Art Show at Huerfano County courthouse

The Museum of Friends (MOF) in collaboration with the Huerfano County Commissioners is presenting a series of satellite art exhibitions, the first of which will open on Fri. Mar. 14 from 3 to 5 pm at the courthouse in Walsenburg. The public is invited to attend. It will be on display until June 30, 2008.

    The artists included in this first show have roots in our community and an association with Walsenburg’s newly established Museum of Friends- founded by artists Brendt Berger and Maria Cocchiarelli-Berger, and opened to the public on October 19, 2007.

    The following is a listing of artists in addition to the Bergers who will be represented in the MOF series.  Bill Thach, Jeanette Faris Thach,  Dave Roberts, Ken Schneider, Ken Martinez, Peggy Zehring, Joan Hanley, Ben Morea Eagle, Reba Lee Savangeau, Jim Fowler,  Jim Robieson, Jason Crum, Kathy W.
