Supervisors to meet Jan 15

WALSENBURG- The Board of Supervisors of the Upper Huerfano Conservation District will meet at 5:30 pm tonight Thurs. Jan. 15, 2009 at 711 Walsen Avenue, Suite A, Walsenburg.  It is open to the public.

Ethnic Groups Highlighted

PUEBLO- The 2009 “Faces of CF&I- A Melting Pot of Steel” fundraising dinner takes place Sat., Jan. 17 at the Pueblo Convention Center.  The theme refers to the many CF&I employees over the years that came from different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.  A gourmet dinner, entertainment and entertaining stories will be showcased.

    Hundreds of photographic images of CF&I employees will be presented during the cocktail and dinner hours. As in the past two years, Jack Quinn and Ray Kogovsek will serve as the evening’s Masters of Ceremony, telling stories of the thousands that were part of the CF&I family in the mine and mills.

    The evening includes a silent auction of donated items, and a live auction with the rare opportunity to bid on exclusive tour packages of various mills inside Rocky Mountain Steel Mills, and many other unique items.

    The event was established as a fundraiser to support the programs of the Steelworks Museum of Industry and Culture and the preservation of the CF&I Archives.

    Cocktails will be at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 6:30 pm.  Tickets are $55 for members of the Bessemer Historical Society and $65 for non-members.  Corporate tables of 8 are available for $600.  Reservations are due by Jan. 13.  Please call 564-9086 for more information.

Brown Bag Books

LA VETA- Brown Bag Books gathers people who like to read and like to eat and like to be with others who like books and like to eat.  Come and join us Fri.  Jan. 30, at 12 noon at the La Veta Library.  We′re going to eat our brown bag lunches and talk about books we read and books we like.  If you have questions, call Marta at 742-6053 or Mary Jean at 742 5763.

2009 SPACe Member Show "This is Our SPACe"

LA VETA- The Spanish Peaks Arts Council’s 2009 Members Show “This Is Our SPACe” is on display now until Feb. 28.  Works in the show comprise a wide array of media.

    The SPACe Gallery is located in the La Veta Town Park at 132 W. Ryus. For additional information visit www.spanishpeaksarts.org or call 719 742-3074.

    Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, 10 am – 3 pm. weather permitting. The Spanish Peaks Arts Council is a nonprofit organization, supporting the arts in the Southern Colorado.

Journey Home partnering with the First Cavalry in 2009

WALSENBURG- The Southeastern Chapter of the First Cavalry Division Association, in cooperation with the Journey Home Learning Center and Deb Williams, delivered clothing and food to local charities in Walsenburg last month.

    Clifford Boxley, President of the southeastern chapter, says “The Journey Home kids also delivered Christmas cards from the chapter and from the kids to residents of the State Veterans Nursing Home in Walsenburg.”  This is the second year that the kids from Journey Home have done so. 

    Boxley continues, “In 2009, the cooperation between the First Cavalry Association and Journey Home will be greatly expanded.  The kids are the future and we are looking forward to working with them on some of their projects.”
