Udall Rally on Sunday
WALSENBURG- Politics can be fun, with music, food and an old time political rally. Congressman Mark Udall will be in Walsenburg on Sunday August 17 at Heritage Park on Main Street by the depot. The fun starts at 11:30 am. There will be good music, good food, good ideas and good conversation. Let’s show our next United States Senator that Huerfano County is the heart and soul of Democratic Colorado. Let’s give him a great southern Colorado welcome. Make sure that your friends and relatives know about the date. There will be other notables there and it will be a great opportunity to show your support and have fun at the same time. Reminder: Sacred Heart Church’s Annual River Mass
GARDNER- Sacred Heart Church of Gardner will be celebrating their annual River Mass on Sunday August 17, 2008 at 12:30 pm. The River Mass will take place at the Upper Huerfano State Park. The Mariachis of Pueblo will be providing musical accompaniment for the River Mass. After the Mass will be a picnic with hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks provided. Please bring a large side dish to share. Please also bring your lawn and/or folding chairs. Everyone is invited to come and join in the celebration. Children’s Dentistry Program Here
Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center and the Kids In Need of Dentistry (KIND) program are teaming up with the Miles for Smiles project to bring much needed comprehensive dental care to children of the area. They will be bringing a traveling bus that is equipped as a dental office, complete with two dental chairs, one x-ray unit, and sterilization unit.
Miles for Smiles colorful bus will be parked at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center beginning on Aug 18, 2008 and will be at that location through August 28th. The program accepts Medicaid and CHP+. They also accept families who are uninsured. The first visit you will receive an exam and x-rays which is $20.00. If treatment is needed we charge families 20% of dental treatment.

Highway 69 Safety Project Beginning
HUERFANO COUNTY – A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) safety improvement project along State Highway 69, northwest of Walsenburg, will begin August 18.
Work includes new guardrail, retaining walls and culvert extensions at various locations along SH 69, between the Walsenburg area and Gardner (mile 0-24). Curve slopes also will flattened where pipes are being extended to increase driver safety.
Beginning Monday, August 18, delays up to 15 minutes can be expected from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as flaggers alternate traffic through the work zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph through the active work zone. Vehicles wider than 12 feet also will be restricted from traveling through the work zone during project hours.
During non-working hours, traffic will need to be reduced to one lane where retaining walls are being constructed, requiring use of a temporary signal to alternate northbound and southbound traffic through the work zone. Delays will be minimal.
Kiewit Western Inc. of Littleton, CO is the contractor for the $569,000 project. It is scheduled for completion in October 2008.
HUERFANO- Now is a good time to identify and deal with noxious weeds on your property. SCU Extension and the Huerfano County Weed Board in collaberation with the Colorado Department of Agriculture will present a weed management workshop to help you identify problem weeds that need to be controlled. Mike Rigirozzi from the Colorado Department of Agriculture will explain how you can receive reimbursements for herbicide and equipment used to control weeds on your property. The workszhop will be held at 7 pm on August 19 in the meeting room of the Huerfano County Community Cener. Refreshments will be served. Please pre-register.
This will be the first of a series of information workshops to help landowners identify and formulate a plan to control noxious weeds. Participants will be eligible for cost share assistance. For more information, call 738-2170.
Local Truck Driver Recognized for Safety Milestone
Grain Valley, MO– Shawn Kirscht of Walsenburg has been recognized by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) for five years of safe, accident-free driving of a commercial tractor-trailer.
Kirscht has been driving professionally for five years and currently hauls freight for Target.
The OOIDA Safe Driving Award Program is designed to recognize and reward OOIDA members for their safe, accident-free years while operating a commercial vehicle. Safe driving awards are available to all eligible OOIDA members who qualify based upon the number of years for which the member has operated a commercial vehicle without being involved in a preventable accident.
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is the national trade association representing the interests of small-business trucking professionals and professional truck drivers.
