County approves employee insurance plan

by Brian Orr
HUERFANO— The Huerfano County Commissioners approved a motion made by Commissioner Max Vezzani to go forward with the new employees insurance plan that was presented to county employees (see related story on page 1).
Vezzani said the commissioners needed to act quickly on the matter, as it was so important to the county employees. At one point, the chairwoman for the Department of Social Services asked the commissioners if her department could pay into a different rate and type of insurance package, as 80 percent of her department funding comes from the state, and only 20 percent from the county. Vezzani, while acknowledging it was tempting to allow the DSS to have a separate insurance plan, felt that all county employees needed to be treated equally, and have the same amount of money spent on them.
In other news, the county will reimburse commissioner Ray Garcia for the purchase of a John Deere Model 750 no-till drill, which the county will use on gravel pit reclamation.
Garcia bought the machine from a private individual for $14,000. It was checked out and found to be in good condition.
The unit, will save the county money in rental fees.
