WALSENBURG — There were approximately 30 people at the HCCC meeting on Thursday, April 2. The food from 7th Street Deli was sponsored by Huerfano County Communication Coalition. Department of Social Services and The Workforce Center are working together to get young people ages 16-22 gainfully employed. Anyone looking for employment ages 23 or above, Melinda Riggle at the Workforce Center Livewell is ready to start painting the bike/pedestrian lanes, called Sharrows, in Walsenburg on Saturday, April 11 from 10 am – 3 pm. The Friends of the Library will be holding their annual book sale at the Spanish Peaks Library on Friday, April 10 from 9 am to 5:30 pm and on Saturday, April 11 from 10am to 1:30 pm. Not only will there be books to buy, but they will also offer their CD and DVD cleaner for a small fee. Call 738-2774 for more information. The La Veta Library has speakers every Thursday starting April 9 at 7 pm. On the 9th, they will be hosting

former Colorado Poet Laureate David Mason who will present a talk “Words and the World; A Poet’s Journey”. His wife Cally Conan-Davies, also a poet, will also be reading. Huerfano County has received a $396,000 DOLA grant and will start renovating the courthouse. The changes to be seen, starting in October, are: a new elevator, roof repair and ADA accessible restrooms. Another application into DOLA is for funding of a new courts building. Recycling is back, now housed at the Waste Transfer Station located east of I-25, across from the old prison. Call 738-9985 for more information. You can currenly recycle glass of all kinds (separated out), cans, cardboard, and paper. Soon, there will be plastic recycling. Ben Wiley is new to town and is on a personal mission to get Walsenburg off the unhealthiest city list in the state. He is starting a running/walking club this month and would like for you to call him at 303-746-3092 for more information (see article on page 19). The Red Cross needs volunteers. Monica Birrer is retiring as Spanish Peaks Library Director. She is ready to start doing her night jobs during the day. The Huerfano County Tourism Board has close to 15,000 names in their database. These are people asking for information about the area and will receive six e-newsletters and/or the Spanish Peaks Trips magazine or a small brochure created by the tourism board, depending on how much information is requested. The next meeting (and last one for the summer) will be held at the Walsenburg Ambulance Building, 326 Main Street, on May 7th at noon.
