Commissioners discuss Coal Bed Methane water

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County Commissioners received a report from Al Tucker dealing with a previous study done on the Raton Basin by Ken Watts of the USGS. The study dealt with vertical coal bed methane and water wells in Huerfano County.  The vertical separation of the two is not great and could be a cause of concern. The study looked at the effects of reducing water pressure on the coal seams which could allow gas to migrate upwards.  Tucker told the commissioners that he and others were setting up monitoring wells to study the impact. They’ll be set up near the Majors Ranch.  The USGS will study the wells.

The National Association of Counties has come out with a resolution to limit the federal government to acquire private property for expansion of military bases. The resolution asks that expansion shall only occur with the consent of willing sellers and only with established proof of need. The Department of Defense currently has 25 million acres of land in the U.S. and continues to acquire land holdings.

The Custer County Road and Bridge department thanked the Huerfano County Road and Bridge department for their help this winter  with the use of their time and snow blower to clear areas & help residents.
