Coal Bed Methane meetings- landowners rights

by Susan Simons

HUERFANO- Landowners concerned about the effects of coalbed methane drilling (CBM) on your own well or creek or on the water resources of the County, can go to a meeting  Thurs. July 17 from 1:30-3:30 at Huerfano County Community Center at 928 Russell in Walsenburg.

The speaker will be Lance Astrella, an attorney from Denver, who is knowledgeable about landowner rights in CBM drilling.  Landowners need to collect baseline data about static water levels and water quality before drilling begins.  They need to collect the data frequently as drilling occurs and keep accurate records.  It is possible to register the data with state and federal agencies that are studying the effects of CBM drilling on water.  If water levels or water quality are harmed by CBM drilling, it will be up to the landowner to provide adequate proof of harm.

Learn about these and other ways to protect  water, at this community meeting.  Astrella will educate both our county officials and the public on how to prepare for CBM drilling and to put the liability for water loss and contamination on the drillers.

The meeting is sponsored by the Majors Ranch POA Environmental Impact Committee. The contact person is Al Tucker at 738-2142.
