Climbing the Spanish Peaks is small potatoes to this group

Huerfanos’ trek to Mount Everest base camp presentation at La Veta Library

LA VETA — Four Huerfano County residents (pictured above left to right: Bruce Johnson, Anne Speroni, Danette Climente, and Peggy Arnold-Hoobler) made a trek to Mount Everest Basecamp in November of 2017. On Thursday, February 1, at La Veta Library, Johnson provided narration for an hour long slide show that included short videos and maps to keep the audience of 50 people informed and oriented. The foursome gained over 14,000 feet in elevation and were assisted by Nepalese porters, who carried most of the group’s gear. Each trekker then carries their own water and day food. Overnight lodging and other meals were found in what are called tea rooms along the way as the group hiked six to seven miles per day. Our local group learned that yaks have the right-of-way on trails and that yak dung is the primary fuel used for heating and cooking. Photo by Bob Kennemer.
