Library at Your Door

WALSENBURG— Library at your door is a new service at the Spanish Peaks Library.  Here’s how it works: if there is a book you would like and it’s not available in our catalog, log into spld.org and go to Services, click on Library at Your Door and fill out the form.  If your request is approved, we will buy the book and Amazon will ship it directly to you.  When you have finished reading, bring the book back to the library and we will add it to our collection!  This service is available for books, large print books, DVD’s and Blu-Ray.

A Man Called Ove Book Discussion

LA VETA— The Two Peaks-One Book series for 2023 continues on Thursday, March 30, 2 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room of the LaVeta Library with a modulated book discussion of the Fredrik Bachman bestseller “A Man Called Ove”. If you have not yet read this intriguing book, we still have copies available for you to check out. Please join us with your thoughts as we explore the many underlying themes and share our thoughts on this fine novel.  Refreshments provided.

Weekend movie at the Fox: Jesus Revolution

WALSENBURG– The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie Jesus Revolution  PG-13 • 2 hours In the 1970s, Greg Laurie and a sea of young people descend on sunny Southern California to redefine truth through all means of liberation. Inadvertently, Laurie meets a charismatic street preacher and a pastor who open the doors to a church to a stream of wandering youth. What unfolds is a counterculture movement that becomes the greatest spiritual awakening in American history. Flamingo Story Time

WALSENBURG – Flamingo Storytime, will be held on Saturday, April, 1 and every other Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.  Mrs. Flamingo will be reading a story out loud to any children (or children at heart) who would like to listen. each child who attends will receive a free book! Join us at the Walsenburg Mercantile.

Opening reception for the Artists’ Choice show

LA VETA— The Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe) in La Veta invites everyone to the opening reception for the Artists’ Choice show now on display. The reception is Saturday, April 1, 5 – 7 p.m. Seventeen area artists are sharing their original artwork at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, in the Town Park. There is no admission fee. Come and enjoy this eclectic collection. Comedy Club at 2nd St Bar & Grill

WALSENBURG— Comedy Club is presented by Salapich Agency, Farm Bureau Insurance at the Walsenburg Golf Course/Second Street Bar & Grill, 1399 Co Rd 502, Walsenburg. Join comedians David Testroet and Jon Carelli this Saturday, April 1. Show starts at 6, arrive early to eat before the show because the kitchen goes dark when the show starts. Preschool registration

WALSENBURG— Peakview Preschool will be registering for the Preschool Program for the year 2023-2024 at Peakview Elementary School on Sunday, April 2, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. This is a new program called Universal Preschool Program approved by the Governor to better serve our children. Eligible children include those who are three years old prior to June 1 st ; four-year old children prior to kindergarten; and pre-school students with disabilities in accordance with IEPs. In past years, families were able to register their child a week before the start of school start. However, this program does not work like that. Families are required to register online and then come to the school to fill out a paper application. On April 2 nd, preschool staff will be available to assist in the online registration process. Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts  Ensemble presents “It is Finished”

LA VETA— The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble cordially invites you to IT IS FINISHED, a poignant and profound Holy Week Remembrance, depicting the breadth, depth and magnitude of the Passion of Christ through Scripture and Song.  We are offering this beautiful, deeply moving musical presentation on Palm Sunday, April 2, at 2 p.m., at the Full Gospel Church, 205 W. Tenth St., Walsenburg, and, in collaboration with Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services, on Good Friday, April 7, at 6 p.m., at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S. Free Tax Preparation

HUERFANO— Tax Day is April 18!  Another Life Foundation offers FREE income tax preparation to eligible community members (those who make $58,000 or less). Our IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites are now open in Huerfano County.  Walk-ins every Monday from 3 – 6 p.m. at the La Veta Public Library and every Wednesday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg through April 17. Mining Museum Volunteer Meeting

WALSENBURG—It’s time to dust off the miners’ hats and arrange a new exhibit for the Walsenburg Mining Museum.  Volunteers are meeting next Tuesday, April 4, at 9:30 a.m. to prepare for the summer tourist season starting May 1.  As part of the cleaning process the volunteers will have a peek at behind-the scene rooms in this historic 1896 jail.  New volunteers are always welcome to this enthusiastic group who keep the coal mining history alive. Historical Society Meeting

WALSENBURG— The next meeting of the Huerfano County Historical Society will be held on Thursday, April 6 at 4 p.m. at the Huerfano Heritage Center located at 114 W. 6th St. Walsenburg. The public is welcome to attend.

Care and Share Mobile Market Returns to La Veta

LA VETA—  The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. The monthly Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The next Mobile Market visit comes to the La Veta Village parking lot on East Francisco Street on Friday, April 7, 2 to 4 p.m. Bring Your Own Bags. Easter Egg Hunt

Sunrise Service

WALSENBURG— New Hope Community Church at 801 Pennsylvania Avenue in Walsenburg will have its annual Easter sunrise service on Easter Sunday, April 9 at 6:15 a.m. A carry in fellowship breakfast follows the service. Services at the regular time from 10:00 – 11:15 will also be held.
Resurrection Sunday Morning

LA VETA— Resurrection Sunday morning will be a breakfast starting at 9 a.m. and service starting at 10 a.m.  Sunday, April 9 at the 4-H Building in La Veta.  The Feed Store Church is hosting the event.  Please join us and bring your friends and family.

Fire Truck Egg Drop Easter Sunday

WALSENBURG— Join Praise Church Walsenburg 311 W 4th St on Sunday, April 9, starting at 9 a.m. for Easter activities. Breakfast starts at 9 a.m. and is free. At 10:30 will be Easter Service following at 12 p.m. join us in the parking lot for the Egg Drop and visit with the Huerfano County Fire Department.

The Leisure Seeker-Movie Matinee at LVPL

LA VETA— The La Veta Library welcomes you to join us on Thursday, April 13 at 2 p.m. as we present “The Leisure Seeker” as our matinee offering for the month.  Starring legendary award winning actors, Donald Sutherland and Helen Miran, the movie takes us on an unforgettable journey with an older couple “escaping” their life in Boston in their faithful RV for an unforgettable trip to Key West, Florida.  Filled with tender moments and surprises, it is a movie that will stay with you long after the credits. SPLD Presents Flicks at the Library

WALSENBURG—Friday, April 14, 1:30 p.m.  This month’s movie is The Princess Bride, a fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love.  He must find her after a long separation and save her.  They must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin to be reunited with each other.  Join us for a fun afternoon at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg!  Free popcorn and movie, but BYOB.  Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Call for loan of historic La Veta photos for awards ceremony

LA VETA— The La Veta Historic Preservation Committee will be holding a Thank You Reception and Awards Ceremony in June of 2023.  This reception will be to thank our community for it’s help in preserving our valuable La Veta town character, and to present national designation plaques to our town’s five nationally recognized properties .  Refreshments will be provided and a photo display will be available for viewing.  If you have an historic photo of La Veta that you would allow us to display at this reception, we would appreciate the loan of such photos.  Please contact Terry at 303-875-0576 (phone or text), or taamalfitano@msn.com to discuss your photo and how we would receive it and return it to you.

Schneider Brewery restoration/ demo project has started

TRINIDAD— As announced last September, Downtown Trinidad Development Group plans to preserve the landmark Schneider Brewery building through a selective demolition and restoration project, which began on Monday, Jan. 23. Trinidad Construction Group is the general contractor for the project. Major sections of the complex deemed structurally unsound by Sun Mountain Design Group will be removed during this process, which is estimated to last 90 days. Short-term traffic disruptions are expected. Plans for the Schneider Brewery buildings’ renewal may include a mixture of retail, residential and office spaces.
The brewery is located at 236 North Convent St.

Cheryl Leef exhibits art at TPL’s Art Wall

TRINIDAD— Local artist Cheryl Leef grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and has spent most of her adult life in Southern Colorado. Her inspiration to paint is from the beauty of the local natural world. She works in oil paint and also in mixed media, where she uses natural objects to embellish her artwork. She is exhibiting seven works at the Trinidad Public Library during the month of March.

Branson Junior Class Bingo Night Fundraiser

TRINIDAD— Come Support the Branson Junior Class on Friday, March 31, 6 p.m. at Fort Wooton in Trinidad. There wil be meatball subs, chips and dessert for purchase, $10 for dinner with one card. Additional cards can be purchased for $2 and there are a lot of prizes available to win.

Artocade Bowl ‘23

TRINIDAD— Raise lots of bucks for the Artocade Art Car Artists stipend fund while having tons of silly fun. Stipends pay for fuel and accommodations so ‘carvelous’ art cars from all over the country can continue to participate in ArtoCade. Cornhole Fundraiser Tournament

TRINIDAD— Join us at Fort Wooton on Saturday, April 1, at 11 a.m. for the Cornhole Fundraiser for the Cathay Williams Memorial Statue. The entry fee is $50 per team with a chance to win $400. There will be a beer garden, food and drawings.

LPRHL Season Championship game

Passover Registration Now Open

TRINIDAD— Friday, April 7, 5:30 p.m. at Temple Aaron of Trinidad, 407 S. Maple St. The Passover Seder at Temple Aaron (in person) is a highlight each year. This year, Rabbi Jack Shlachter will lead the Seder, and the meal will again be catered by Alys Romer, who has provided incredible meals for Temple Aaron events for many years. Seats are $36 for nonmember adults, $10 for nonmember children ages 6-13, and free for children under 5. Members of Temple Aaron may attend at no charge. The Seder is one of the highlight events at Temple Aaron each year and spots fill quickly, so please register if you would like to attend.  Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. Book Signing at TPL

TRINIDAD— After a 45-year career as a museologist, archaeologist, paleontologist and historian, Calvin B. Smith recently published his first fiction novel – about time travel.  Smith will hold a book signing on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at the Trinidad Public Library for his new book “The Mammoth Quest”.

Free tutoring for PreK-8 kids

COLFAX— PED announces its new tutoring service in partnership with Paper that focuses on mathematics, language arts and science. The program offers students in grades preK-8 from New Mexico Title I Schools access to free academic support from tutors on a secure platform. Participating students will receive 20 hours of tutoring at no cost to families.

Peer support groups

RATON— Are you struggling with addiction? Would you like to support a friend who is struggling with addiction? Join Elias Romero, a 17 year certified Peer Support Worker who will facilitate the group. Assisted by Zia Youth’s McLean at Zia Youth, 207 Park Ave, in Raton on Saturdays. 18- 30 year olds will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. and under 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

RHS Frito Pie and Bingo fundraiser

RATON— Come support the Junior class this Sunday, April 2, 12 – 3 p.m. at the Raton Highschool cafeteria. Tickets are $10, $30 for 12 bingo games and $2 for daubers. Try your luck at the 50/50 raffle as well as enjoying some Frito pie.

Springer High School presents:  April Fools Bingo Fundraiser

Colfax County Farm & Livestock Bureau Scholarship

COLFAX— The Colfax County Farm & Livestock Bureau is pleased to offer two $750 scholarships for the 2023/2024 school year. Scholarship applicants are required to be a resident of Colfax County. They may be graduating home school or high school seniors, college undergraduate, vocational or trade school students. Boating Safety Course

RATON— New Mexico State Parks Presents Boating Safety Course on Saturday, April 15, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. This free course is for new and experienced boaters and is required for motorboat operators born after Jan. 1, 1989.
