Busy week for Lady Redskins

Clawed by Panthers, sink Vikings, ramrod Rams

LA VETA — The first of three home games for the busy girl’s team was an important District-6 match-up against the Sierra Grande Panthers this past Thursday night. The outcome was not what the Redskins wanted at the final horn. The Panthers offense outgunned the La Veta five even though the hometown team stayed within striking distance most of the first half. The final, unfortunately, was a tough loss for La Veta at 58-46.

“We played well in the beginning, but didn’t execute the way we should have in the second half,” said Redskin coach Greg King. “I feel we could have won the game had we executed better.”

Friday the team suited up once again to play the host role, this time against the Center Vikings. The Redskins took out their frustrations from the previous night on the Viking five leading big time in the first quarter 20-8.

The first quarter set the tone for the first half as the visiting Viking’s ship took on more water in the second quarter. The visitor Vikings couldn’t row or bail fast enough as the Redskin offense took a halftime lead doubling their opponents score at 30-15.

In the time remaining, the teams traded baskets as the Redskins maintained the same 15 point lead to win 42-27.

Centennial was next in the cross hairs of the offensive-minded guns of the La Veta starting five. A 52-18 final score told the story without much elaboration needed.

La Veta has been challenged the past few weeks with back-to-back multiple games on their schedule and it appeared their play was a little on the worn-out side of the ledger. Coach King was optimistic even with heavy hitters Kim and Sangre de Cristo remaining on the schedule.

“The girls’ attitude is still good,” commented the veteran coach. “Kids are more resilient this time of year than coaches.”

The Lady Redskin record is very impressive to say the least and they remain one of the top teams in 1A at 14-3 overall. (No individual stats provided at press time)
