Supervisors to meet

WALSENBURG- The Board of Supervisors of the Upper Huerfano Conservation District will meet at 5:30 pm on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 711 Walsen Avenue, Suite A, Walsenburg.  The meeting is open to the public. 

Public meeting for trail from Fiesta Park to Lathrop Park

WALSENBURG– Huerfano County is considering applying for a grant to determine the alignment for a trail from Fiesta Park to Lathrop State Park.  A public meeting is scheduled at 6 pm on Thurs. Mar. 18 at the Huerfano County Community Center.  The meeting will be informal with maps of proposed corridors.  Please come and share your input with us.

All Night Movie Mania

WALSENBURG– The La Plaza de Los Leones Youth Auxiliary will be hosting an "All Night Movie Mania!" for 7th to 12th graders at the Eagles Hall this Friday, March 19 at 7:00 pm. Movies will be shown non-stop until 7:00 am Saturday morning. Tickets are $7 at the door and include dinner, popcorn, punch  and pancake breakfast. Concession items will be available for purchase as well.

    A variety of age appropriate movies will be shown all night using a projector. Bring pillow and blanket to lay on only. This event is "lock-in style" so attendees are not permitted to leave early without a parent or guardian. For more info, please call or text Ricardo Bobian at 719-821-5938. All proceeds go towards scholarship funds for qualified and deserving Huerfano County students.  

Hunter education course

PUEBLO- A  weekend hunter education course will be given on March 20 & 21 from 8 am to 3 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1601 Bonforte Blvd., Pueblo.  Pre-registration is required and  the minimum age is 10 years.  For more information call Jose Alvarado  719-544-1922.

    All persons born on or after January 1, 1949 must successfully complete a hunter education course before being able to purchase or apply for any hunting or trapping license in Colorado.  Deadline for applying for any limited license for the 2010 big game fall seasons is April 6, 2010.  

Huerfano Hometown Heroes packing up

WALSENBURG- Join Huerfano Hometown Heroes this Sat. March 20th, to package up boxes for our deployed heroes!  Let our troops in harm′s way know that we appreciate them and their service to us and our country by sending them needed/wanted items along with notes and cards of support.  Hope to see you at Adventure Trails on 7th Street in Walsenburg this Sat. at 1 pm. 

A Roadkill Supper and a Hootenanny-who could ask for more?

WALSENBURG– Forget about spaghetti suppers, come to a Roadkill Supper and Gospel Hoot-Tin-Annie at the United Church of Walsenburg on Sat. Mar. 20, from 5 to 8 pm.  Only $5 for adults, $3 for children for all you can eat- featuring Hsalunag (goulash) and unshot chili (chili) poor man′s bread, yodel stew, biscuits, frog-eyed salad and dirt cake with snow, the delicious supper will be accompanied by music.  Guest artists are welcome, bring your instruments, music, voices, ears and appetites and join in the country-style hoot and holler music with a bit of footstomping thrown in.

    Remember, all this happens at the United Church of Walsenburg (across from Loaf ′n Jug) Saturday, March 20, 5 to 8 p.m.  Adults are $5 and children $3 with tickets available at Southern Colorado Land, 701 Walsen.  Hoot, holler, praise God and eat.

Cat Coalition to meet

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano Cat Coalition will meet this Sun. March 21 at 2:00 pm at the Community Center in Walsenburg.  Guest Speaker will be Norma Wiggins, founder of the Cat Care Network of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico.  Ms. Wiggins will be describing the services she can offer to Huerfano County. 

    Also on the agenda is a discussion about the future of the Huerfano Cat Coalition, schedules and fees for spring spaying/neutering, the need to relocate a feeding area for a colony of cats, and the need for volunteers to trap, transport to vet and/or feed cats in Huerfano County.  If you are interested in services from the Huerfano Cat Coalition or want to volunteer services, please come to this meeting.

Informal La Veta Town Board candidates forum

LA VETA– An informal meet the candidate forum has been scheduled in La Veta for the Town Board race.  The meeting will be held at Sammie’s Mon. Mar. 22 at 6:30 pm.

    All those filing nominating petitions are invited, The candidates for Mayor and the Town Board would like to hear from La Veta citizens concerning the important issues in the community.  Please come and express your views and concerns.

Writing workshop

WALSENBURG– Calling all Huerfano and Las Animas County Women!  Join us for the 10 week Writing Workshop “Creative Woman, Powerful Woman.”  No previous writing skills or experience required!  This is a program of honest, empowering discovery, promoting wellness and balance in mind, body and spirit, through the process of creative writing.  It is an opportunity to look and see who you may become and to know the unique purposes you alone possess in this world. 

    The sessions will be at the Family Resource Center, 615 Russell Avenue (Corner of 7th), Walsenburg.  Beginning March 22, 6-8 pm.  Register by calling 738-2378.  All materials and program provided free of charge.

Water Board meets

WALSENBURG- The Board of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will meet at 6:00 pm on Mon. March 22 at City Hall, 525 S Albert Avenue, Walsenburg.  The meeting is open to the public.

Food Inc.-  Free Movie

TRINIDAD- How much do we really know about the food we buy at our local supermarkets and serve to our families?  If you eat you need to see this film.  "Food Inc." reveals surprising — and often shocking truths — about what we eat, how it′s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. 

    This free film is brought to you on Mon. March 22 at 7 pm at Carnegie Library by a grant from the Purgatoire Valley Foundation and presented by the collaborative efforts of the Culebra Range Community Coalition, the Carnegie Library and Earth Mountain Education Farm.

Attention prison employees and the public

WALSENBURG– Employees of the Walsenburg prison and interested public are invited to attend a free presentation regarding how to deal with job changes. Carol Chiarito of New England Financial will be on hand to answer questions at the Walsenburg Housing Authority building, 125 Colorado Ave, on Wed. Yummy Art!

WALSENBURG- An Art Workshop for children in grades K-7 will be held at Spanish Peaks Library, Wed. March 24, from 4:30-6:00 pm.  This is an opportunity to watercolor with Dianne Hanisch and hear about the book, Potluck!, by Anne Shelby.  Bring your watercolor sets and brushes or use ours.  Please sign up for the event at the library. Spring forward with God rally

WALSENBURG- The Landmark Baptist Church in Walsenburg will be hosting a Spring Forward with God Rally on Fri, March 26. It will be held at the Landmark Baptist Church located at 425 Maple St., Walsenburg at 7 pm. 

    Rick Korsmo, special guest  from Dumas, TX will be speaking at the rally. 

    Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. A frito-pie dinner will be furnished after the rally.

Blues at the Fox! Benefit Concert

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano Youth and Arts Foundation and La Plaza de los Leones, Inc. are sponsoring a concert by Sonny Boy and  Money on Mar. 27 from 8-11 pm. Proceeds benefit Huerfano Youth and Arts Foundation and La Plaza de los Leones Scholarship Fund.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for youth under 16 years of age, and are available at Main Street Office Supply, 38 Special Liquor Store, Rosa’s Cantina, and the Fox Theater. Jim Jones Concerts for causes

Navajo Annual Chili Cook Off

NAVAJO RANCH– The Navajo Homeowners Association will be hosting its Annual Chili Cook Off Sat. March 27, at 6 pm. at the Navajo Water Board Building.  Each Navajo family is encouraged to bring a crock pot or pan full of their favorite chili recipe for judging.  Tasting cups will be given to everyone so they can cast their votes for the best red and green chilies.  Families are also requested to bring a dessert or cornbread, chips, crackers or whatever condiment they like with chili.  The Navajo Chili Committee will furnish drinks and Tums.   Awards will be given for the best red & green chili, the best wild game chili, and the most unusual chili.  For more information please call 738-1058.

LA VETA- ArtTalk meets Mon. March 29 at 1 pm at the La Veta Library.  We just talk about art. You don′t have to talk; you can just listen.

Vegetable gardening

PUEBLO- CSU Extension in Pueblo is offering a Vegetable Gardening class on Tues. March 30 from 6-9 pm.  The cost is $15.  This class will be held at the Pueblo County Conference Room, 1001 Santa Fe.  Registration with payment is due by Tues. Mar. 23.

    Learn tips and techniques for successful gardening in the varied climate of Pueblo County.  Innovative and traditional methods will be covered:  straw bale gardening, gardening in containers, soil preparation, plant selection, irrigation, harvesting. Youth Sports Night with the Nuggets

WALSENBURG-  On Thurs. Apr 1 at 8:30 pm,  the Nuggets will be playing the Portland Blazers and a portion of each ticket sold will be donated to Veterans Sports for Youth!

    The special ticket offer will be $27 for Corner Balcony Seats or $78 for Lower Level Corner Seats.  Free bus transportation to and from the game will be provided to the first 50 people who purchase tickets!  Anyone under 18 on the bus must be accompanied by an adult.

Big game scoring seminar

LATHROP– A big game scoring seminar will be held on Sat. April 3 from 1-5 pm at the Lathrop State Park Visitor Center, sponsored by Colorado State Parks.

    The seminar is for anyone interested in the methods of scoring big game antlers, horns and skulls.  It is a free seminar and you only need bring yourself and note taking materials.  Personal trophies may be brought and used for demonstrations and examples as time allows.

    An official measurer will demonstrate scoring techniques for all types of big game animals according to the procedures of the Boone & Crockett Club, Pope & Young Club, The Longhunter’s Society and Safari Club International.

    The seminar is for information only and the attendees will not be certified as an official measurer upon completion.  Class size is limited to the first 20 who call to sign up. To register, call Lance Gatlin at 989-1027. 

Wind, Sand and Stars

LA VETA- The Spanish Peaks Arts Council announces "Wind, Sand, and Stars" on display now through April 3.  The original artwork of 23 area artists includes the unique plexiglass creations of Denver artist Pam Fortner. The range of media includes fiber art, paintings, photography, jewelry, batik, etching, and block prints — a truly eclectic display. As usual, this show includes works by beginning, emerging, and established artists, including La Veta residents Judith Baker Montano and Albert Anderson Clymer.

Spring Time Computer Classes

WALSENBURG- Free computer classes provided by LoboSavvy Technologies will be held at the Spanish Peaks Library starting April 6 at 6 pm. Parelli Horsemanship

PUEBLO COUNTY- A free information and demonstration day, one of several Parelli Natural Horsemanship events and opportunities to be offered to horse lovers in the areas west of Pueblo (western Pueblo as well as Custer & Fremont counties)

Earth Week Cleanup

HUERFANO- The Huerfano County Tourism Board would like to invite everyone to participate in the first annual Earth Week Community Cleanup April 20-24.  All charges at the Huerfano County Transfer station will be half price during this time thanks to the generosity of the County Government and a $2000 donation from the city of Walsenburg.   The half price days will give everyone a chance to do some spring cleaning. 

    The Tourism Board challenges each community to get teams together to help tidy up prior to tourist season.  Get some volunteers together and haul some trash!  For example, the  Huerfano County Parks and Trails committee will be doing a river clean-up from Main street to Ysidro Street on Fri. April 23.  This is a great opportunity for school, church or youth groups to get involved in community service.  Can you think of some place in our community (or maybe a neighbor who needs some help)  that could stand a little spring cleaning?     

SPRHC Outreach Clinic offering free screenings for adults

WALSENBURG- The Healthy Village Navigator for Huerfano County, Roberta Bustos, announces free health screenings for adults.  The SPRHC outreach clinic at 129 Kansas Avenue in Walsenburg offers these tests free of charge:  Cardiac Assessment, Glucose Testing, Lipid Panel, Hemmocult Testing, Blood Pressure, Oxygen/pulse, and Height/Weight.

1st Cavalry Division Chapter and Association recognized

SOUTHERN COLORADO- The Southeastern Colorado Chapter of the 1st Cavalry Division Association was recognized on Jan. 1 by the Veterans History Project and the Library of Congress. A Certificate and Letter were presented to the Chapter.

    Through the efforts of Chapter President Clifford Boxley, the 1st Cavalry Division Association became one of the " Founding Partners " in the Veterans History Project. The purpose of this project is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans, so that future generations may hear directly from the veterans and better understand the realities of war.

    It is a great honor for a small veterans group to be honored in this way.  Our hope is to expand our collection efforts in 2010, so that the stories of our area war veterans can be preserved for future generations.
