Owls! We give a hoot!
LATHROP- This Friday June 6 at 7 pm come to Lathrop State Park for a program on owls. Lathrop Ranger Stacey Lewis will explain how owls adapt to their environment, and tell how these unique birds function in order to survive in the wild. Proof of their habits will be shown by dissecting owl pellets. It is really a fun way to see what their diet has been!
On Saturday evening, head back to the park at 7 pm. Perennial favorite, Terry Lakes, is packing his harmonica to entertain campers and park visitors. Terry demonstrates harmonica playing from the basics to fiddle tunes, then from the blues to rock & roll. Cds and low cost student harmonicas will be for sale.
All events are free, and are held at the Amphitheater in Pinon Campground but a valid parks pass is required on all vehicles entering the park. In the event of rain, programs will be held at the Visitor’s Center. Girl Scouts bake and yard sale
WALSENBURG- Girl Scout Troop 70 is holding a rummage sale at Martie Henderson’s booths on 6th and Main Street in Walsenburg this Saturday June 7 from 8 am to 3 pm. They will also have home baked goodies for sale. The girls are raising money for their trip to California this summer. Come out for food and fun and to support your local Girl Scouts.
Benna-fit Tea for India Team
LA VETA- On Sunday, June 8 at 12:30 p.m., a "Benna-fit" Tea will be held at the La Veta United Methodist Church to raise funds for the India Mission Team. Tea sandwiches and dessert will be served, and Benna Fulfs beautiful clothes will be available for donations to the mission team going to Namakkal, India June 23-July 9 to serve at a Pediatric AIDS Clinic. Ken Fulfs, Benna′s son, says, "Ma would love for her friends to have her clothes, and know that she was helping this good cause."
Republicans potluck
WALSENBURG- A potluck dinner will be held at the next Huerfano County Republicans meeting on Thursday evening, June 12 at the Walsenburg Community Center. The dinner will start at 6 pm and follow with guest speaker Ken Torres, House District 64 Candidate.

Invasive tree removal
LATHROP- Volunteers are welcome to participate in an invasive tree removal project on Saturday, June 14, from 8:30 am-12pm at Lathrop State Park. Help is needed by volunteers to use chainsaws to cut Russian Olive trees or haul branches from the work site. Meet at the Visitor Center at 8:30 am. Lunch and beverages will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, sturdy shoes, and bring their own gloves if they have them.
Lathrop will host on-going Russian Olive removal projects the second Saturday of every month through September to continue to eradicate this invasive tree from the park and to open more shoreline access for fishing. Volunteers who would like to participate can sign up by calling Stacey Lewis at 738-2376 ext. 101 or e-mail stacey.lewis@state.co.us. Volunteers who work 48 hours or more at state parks are eligible to receive a free annual state parks pass.
4-H golf scramble entries due today

Want to go fishing this summer?
WALSENBURG- 4-H is partnering with the Fountain Creek Water Sentinels of Pueblo to host a fishing camp in July. The camp will be held the first four Wednesdays in July from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. This camp is absolutely free. However, transportation is limited so it is only open to the first 20 kids who register by June 18. Kids must be between the ages of 9-14 years old but do not have to be a 4-H member!
So what are you going to do while you are at the camp? Well, fish of course! You will also fly fish, reel fish, learn different fishing knots, practice casting, learn parts of the fishing rod, conduct pH testing of the water and much more! Fishing rods are supplied but are limited so if you have your own fishing rod, please bring it. Come to the camp and begin to learn how to become a master fisherman! Call 738-2170 for details.
No fireworks display on the 4th
WALSENBURG- There will be no vendors’ booths or fireworks display out by the hospital this year. Long range weather forecasts are calling for extremely dry conditions, and because the 4th falls on a Friday this year, vendors are already committed to La Veta’s Art in the Park and other weekend festivals. Additionally staffing for the event was difficult, with the large number of hospital employees planning to be out of town for the three day weekend.
Landowners forum
WALSENBURG- The Upper Huerfano Conservation District will be holding a vital community forum for landowners on June 24 at 6 pm to gather input on natural resource concerns in Huerfano County. Details will be announced next week. Dinner will be free for those who RSVP to the District office, 738-1171.
