You will also be able to view the sun through filtered binoculars. What a great opportunity!

Then on Friday & Saturday evenings, at 8:30 pm at the amphitheater you can take in The Night Sky. There will an informational power point presentation about the stars.  Then, you will be able to take what you have learned and put that information to use!  Fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the presentation, we will reconvene at Site D96. You will have the opportunity to use telescopes and binoculars to observe the night sky firsthand.  Wow!

Historic Preservation seeking endangered places

WALSENBURG- With all the historic buildings and sites in Huerfano County, there is interest in preserving them before neglect or perhaps destruction endangers them.  If you are interested in learning about historic preservation, and want to learn how to save our community’s unique and historic architecture, there is an upcoming meeting you will want to attend.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. and the Huerfano County Historical Society are hosting an informational presentation by Kayte Chadbourn, a representative of Colorado Preservation, Inc. at Walsenburg City Hall in the council meeting room Tuesday, June 24.  It will outline steps local groups can take to place sites on their most endangered list.  The meeting begins at 6 pm.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. is the only statewide, non-profit organization that supports historic preservation through education, advocacy, information, and technical assistance.  CPI’s Endangered Places Program began in 1997 in order to aid communities around the state with structures that are at risk of being lost.  The program publishes the annual Colorado’s Most Endangered Places List which gives the public a chance to nominate buildings that are significant to our heritage and endangered.  The List promotes awareness and recognition of these structures and general preservation around the state.  The Endangered Places Program provides continuous support to those buildings listed.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. can provide assistance in seeking preservation solutions.

Examples of past endangered places include Indian sites, a railroad depot, a theater building, Walsenburg′s former high school/middle school building, a cemetery, Victor′s Silver Dollar Saloon, hotels, barns and other Colorado sites and buildings.

To have a site listed as endangered, the state-wide committee, which is funded partly by the State Historical Fund of the Colorado Historical Society, reviews all the information gathered by local residents.

Tuesday’s meeting is sponsored by the Huerfano County Historical Society, Walsenburg Mining Museum and Francisco fort Museum in La Veta.  For more information contact Margaret Gleisberg, 738-0629.
