Christmas Cantata Performance

LA VETA and WALSENBURG- The “Mystery and the Majesty”  by Joseph Martin will be performed by the Huerfano County Community Singers–some of your neighbors and friends.          There will be two performances:  Sat. Dec. 11, 7 pm at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 420 S. Main and Sun. Dec. 12, 7pm at the United Church, 108 Kansas Ave in Walsenburg.

The accompanist is Eileen Bankson, the director is Carol Lyon and Assistant Director is Peggy Arnold-Hoobler.  The Brunner family will help with the narration. The music for this Cantata is beautiful and uses many Carols–some familiar and some not.  All of our singers invite you to enjoy this Christmas music with them–it would be a good Christmas present for you and your family.  Receptions will be after the performance at each church.  Questions?  Call Carol 989-0826.

WALSENBURG- For an enjoyable morning and lunch, the public is invited to come to the Community Youth+ Concert on Sat. Dec. 18, 11am at the United Church, 108 Kansas Avenue.  It is so heartening to see and hear our young people learning to play the piano and violin–the future of music looks good!  The ”+ “ in our concerts is for the adults who also participate in the recital.

After all of this fun, the Community Youth Chorus will present their version of the musical “S.O.C.C.E.R.” which stands for the Society of Christmas Carols Emergency Rescue!  Kathie Hill is the creative force behind this musical which has a group of young people trying to sign up for a Soccer Team.  The adults are trying to save the singing of Christmas Carols!  It is a fun musical with some adults and Mayci and Reid Edmundson, Caitlyn Dunn and Grace and Faith Brunner!  Lunch will be served after the performance.  Please bring a plate of sandwiches or cookies.  Soup and drink will be provided.  Come and join us to celebrate Christmas! Questions?  Call Carol–  989-0826.

New book on Hispanos in Huerfano

TRINIDAD- In her recently released book, Virginia Sanchez presents new information about Hispano settlers of Cucharas, including little-known topics such as Indian captives in Hispano households and the role of Hispanic women in Colorado’s water history.  Sanchez  will be at the Trinidad History Museum Bookstore, 312 E. Main Street, on Sat. Dec. 18 from noon-2 pm to visit with guests and sign copies of the book “Forgotten Cuchareños of the Lower Valley.”

Sanchez, who lives in Denver, began her research when her mother-in-law gave her an acequia (irrigation ditch) ledger that dated back to 1884.  She spent several years researching land records, oral histories, irrigation ditch records, newspapers, maps, census records, and civil and church records. She discovered that the ledger referred to Cucharas, which no longer exists but was once located between Walsenburg and La Veta.  Gone are the main plaza, stage station, four schools, seven acequias, chapel and penitente (religious fraternal) meeting house, and the Denver and Rio Grande railyard.
