Blanken recall effort stumbles along

LA VETA- The effort to recall La Veta Town Trustee Dawn Blanken hit a new stumbling block when it failed to reach the minimum required number of valid signatures.

According to La Veta Town Clerk Nancy Culbreath, the recall committee submitted 102 signatures on October 20, but upon inspection, twelve were found to be invalid, leaving the petition just one name short of the 91 names needed.  As of press time Wednesday morning, the recall committee had not submitted any amendments to their original petition.

Culbreath also said that the recall effort is in a 15-day protest period, ending Nov.4, where a registered elector in La Veta can formally file a protest against the recall petition.  Culbreath will then check amendments to see if they meet requirements, and then the earliest she could present the matter to the Town Board would be Nov.16 to begin setting up for a new election.
