Ashby enters not guilty plea in on-duty shooting

ROCKY FORD — Former Rocky Ford and Walsenburg police officer James Adam Ashby, entered a not guilty plea during an arraignment hearing in Otero District Court Thursday, Feb. 12 in connection with the fatal shooting of an unarmed man last October in Rocky Ford. Ashby is accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Jack Jacquez inside of Jacquez’s mother’s home in this small southeast Colorado community. Last month the district court found enough probable cause for Ashby to be tried for second degree murder following a day-long preliminary hearing. Ashby was fired from his patrol officer’s position with the Rocky Ford Police Department within days of the shooting. A July 27, 2015 trial date has been set.
