Area golfers advance to State

by David Tesitor

Rye- Two local high school golfers advanced to the 2A State golf tournament to be held Oct. 3 to 4th at Cougar Canyon Country Club in Trinidad.  Steven Rodriguez, a senior, from John Mall qualified with an eighty three.  This will be his first trip to the state tournament.  He missed the cut-off by one stroke last season.  Also qualifying was La Veta’s Ron Ortivez, also a senior.  Ron qualified with an eighty six.  For Ortivez, who is celebrating his eighteenth birthday today, this will also be his first trip to state.  His qualifying turned to be the best present he could receive, at least the most memorable.

Justin Eccher from John Mall just missed the cut with a ninety.  He was in a five person five hole playoff to determine the last qualifier.  He was eliminated on the first playoff hole.
