Mobile Vet Center in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG — The Pueblo Mobile Vet Center will be in Walsenburg Tues., November 13, 10 am to 2 pm at the Huerfano County Community Center. Vet center staff will be on hand to provide information about Vet Center services and other resources that may benefit veterans in the area.

Free legal clinic at Spanish Peaks Library

WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the SECOND TUESDAY of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library at 415 Walsen Avenue in Walsenburg. The next date for the clinic is Tuesday, November 13.

By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and everyone will be helped on a first- come, first-served basis.

The final 2018 clinic is December 11.

Huerfano County Republicans Meet on Tuesday, November 13

Huerfano County Republicans will be meeting at the La Plaza Inn at 6 pm on Tuesday, November 13. Please come and be a part of the “plan, do, review” of Tuesday’s election results. We will be having a meet and greet at 5:30 pm, meeting at 6 pm, then a no-host dinner at the La Plaza Inn after the meeting. We’ll see you there.

WALSENBURG — Vendors wanted for the Holly Jolly Boutique scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25 at the Fox Theatre, 715 Main Street. Booths cost $10 for a 10 x 10 space. Wobbly Mine Strike presentation at La Veta Library

LA VETA — The La Veta Library will host Nicholas Bernhard Thursday, November 15, 2 pm as he presents a program on the Wobbly Mine Strike. In 1927, the front range of Colorado was dominated by coal mining immigrants who worked long hours for meager pay, horrific accidents were a fact of life, and freedom of speech was limited. Finally they reached their breaking point and went on strike. Mr. Bernhard will cover the origins of the strike and the shocking climax at the Columbine Mine. CVCCS Thanksgiving service and Christmas Basket food drive kickoff

LA VETA — The Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services is sponsoring a Thanksgiving service Friday Nov. 16, 6pm at La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S Main Street.

The purpose of the service is to kick off the non-perishable and non-expired food drive for Christmas Baskets (for families in need in the Cuchara Valley.). St. Mary Catholic Church float assembly for Parade of Lights

WALSENBURG — St. Mary Catholic Church will be entering the 29th Annual Holiday parade of Lights scheduled for Friday November 23, 7 pm. A Taste of Huerfano County celebration

WALSENBURG — The Early Learning Center is hosting the 1st Taste of Huerfano County fall harvest celebration Saturday, November 17, 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Washington Underground. Local restaurants and organizations will be on site with samples of local food and information. The cost is $5 for ages 13 and up, $1 for 5-13 years and children under 5 are free. Community Thanksgiving Dinner

WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth is host- ing it’s annual FREE Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. The dinner will be held at the Eagle’s Hall on Monday, No- vember 19. The meal will begin at 5 pm, and we will serve the community till 7 pm. A traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be served, and community members can get their meal to go, if necessary. Before and after parade party at Eagles Hall

New Hope Reunion Feast

WALSENBURG — New Hope Community Church of Walsenburg invites those who have attended or visited the church or the legacy church, Calvary Baptist, to visit once again at a special event. La Veta Annual Holiday Arts Fund Raiser

LA VETA — Each December since 2008 the La Veta arts community has held an end of year culinary fund raising event. The first three years the funds went toward the Spanish Peaks Arts Council’s (SPACe) building expansion. Those inaugural events were so successful and well received that this fund raiser has continued and now the funds raised pay for the Hwy 160 “Art Galleries” signs, provide art scholarships to lo- cals and supplemental funds for La Veta youth-oriented art activities, e.g. Fridays for Fun (put on by the La Veta School of the Arts) and SPACe’s Children’s and Teen’s Art Workshops.

In honor of the tenth anniversary of this worthy, fun and delicious event, the funding beneficiaries have been expanded to include the La Veta Public Library’s Scary Story Contest, the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts (FCPA) Theater and the recently formed FCPA Show Choir.

The event is on Saturday, December 1 from 5 to 7:30pm. Beth Evans of the Shalawalla Gallery produced the colorful poster and tickets; as she has done so graciously and creatively for the past several years. The six participating venues are: La Veta Gallery on Main, SPACe, Funky Monkey Art Space, Shalawalla Gallery & Gift Shop, La Veta School of the Arts, and Silvershoe.

As a new and special treat, the FCPA Show Choir will pro- vide Christmas caroling during this year’s event. The 2018 theme is: Yuletide Holidays around the World – a culinary celebration. Each venue will provide some type of food and refreshment to ticket holders. The La Veta Gallery on Main, in keeping with longstanding tradition, will provide a selection of desserts. The other locations will provide taster or small plate offerings along with a liquid refreshment. Each venue will also be holding a drawing for a prize of their choosing. All ticket holders will be entered in the master drawing for an adult art scholarship with an estimated value of at least $100. The master drawing will be held that evening at the La Veta Gallery on Main. Tickets are $25 each and are now available for purchase at the participating venues. WALSENBURG — Washington Underground has many active living programs geared for people of all ages. Adult Co-ed Basketball is every Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30 pm in the gym. Get off the couch and join the fun!

Boot Camp with Michael Reynolds is every Tuesday night at Washington Underground from 5:30-6:30 pm. No experience needed, just the desire to get fit! Yoga is offered three times a week at Washington Underground: Tuesday & Thursday at noon and Friday night at 5:15pm. Senior Exercise is Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 10am in the Washington Under- ground Gym. Increase your activity with this fun class for ages 60+. Come to any of these programs or just drop by and use the equipment in the weight room.

Two Peaks Fitness offers basic self defense training and power fitness

Ancestors Exhibition at MOF

WALSENBURG — This exhibition has been planned to ac- knowledge those who have passed and the people left behind who cope with loss. Loss is part of all of our shared experience. However this past summer in Huerfano County the effects of the Spring Creek fire and its aftermath are still coloring our lives. This was more than most of us were prepared to cope with and for many of us art is the way to express how its ire is still being felt.

In respect to those whose lives were changed by the fire, the Museum of Friends has invited artists to create new instal- lations to explore mourning, loss or memory of the power of their ancestors.

The exhibit includes works by Walsenburg’s own Ray Espinoza (now resident of Denver,) Dianne Hanisch, Lorraine Andreatta, Harold Vargas, Irene Grilley, and artists from many other parts of country: Ily Reiling, Nai’a Lewis, Liz Whitney Quizard. Works include: sculptures, wall assemblages, sound and audio installations, paintings and many unique combines.

City seeking volunteers for historic preservation board

WALSENBURG — The City of Walsenburg is seeking two additional volunteers to serve on a Historical Preservation Board authorized with the approval of Ordinance 1067 establishing a Certified Local Government. The five member board is charged with developing criteria for the review and designation of historic resources, review and determine qualifications for properties for designation as either an historic structure, site, or districts, conduct surveys of potential historic sites or properties and then develop and assist with public education programs that relates specifically to historical preservation.

The two board positions will serve a four year term. Meetings are conducted a minimum of four times a year but may meet more frequently to fulfill the responsibilities of the board.

Some specific requirements that individuals must meet to be considered for appointment by City Council include professional background and or property/business ownership. Two of the five members shall be professionals in preservation related disciplines such as, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural history, archaeology, history, planning, American studies, American civilization, cultural geography or cultural anthropology. Two members will be “stakeholders”. A “stake-holder” is a person who owns property or a business within the municipal limits of the City of Walsenburg. There is an opportunity for an interested person to serve in an at large capacity if they do not meet “stakeholder” or professional requirements. Members do not have to live within the City limits.

Citizens interested in serving on the Historic Preservation Board can pick up applications and an outline of board responsibilities and requirements by contacting the City Clerk. Applications with a letter of interest must be returned to City Hall by Monday, December 3. Applicants will be reviewed with recommendations on membership submitted to the City Council for approval at the council meeting scheduled for early January.

TRINIDAD — Get your pets spayed or neutered at the Max-Fund mobile clinic Wednesday, November 7 to Saturday, November 9 at Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association. TRINIDAD — The Las Animas/Huerfano County Health Department will host a free workshop on the use of Nalazone Friday, November 9, 12 pm & 5 pm at LAC Health Department, 412 Benedicta Avenue. Nalaxone, given as a nasal spray, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save a life. Get free naloxone and learn how to use it.
