Naloxone (Narcan) workshop today

WALSENBURG — The Las Animas/Huerfano County Health Department will host a free workshop on the use of Nalazone Thursday, November 8, 12 pm and 5 pm at Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Avenue. Nalaxone, given as a nasal spray, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save a life. Get free naloxone and learn how to use it. SCCOG Agency on Aging seeks input for four year plan meeting today

WALSENBURG — South Central Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging invites you to participate in a focus/input group about the future of our aging community. We invite you to join us over the next weeks to share your comments, suggestions, and ideas for the future of our region. Please help us shape our Four Year plan serving Huerfano and Las Animas Counties. Meetings will in Walsenburg and Trinidad. Sam Law presentation today “Three women who started the Civil War”

LA VETA — The LaVeta Library is pleased to welcome back our favorite Civil War enthusiast and historian, Sam Law, as she presents a fascinating talk on who actually caused the Civil War. Most historians would say state’s rights activists or slaves, but in this novel twist the real story lies in the lives of three amazing women. SCCOG Hiring event

WALSENBURG — South Central Council of Governments is hosting a hiring event Friday, November 9, 1 to 4 pm at the Workforce Center, Walsenburg Community Center , 928 Russell Avenue.

Would you like to join our team to care for the elderly in Huerfano County? The Huerfano Care Services Program pro- vides in-home assistance to individuals allowing them to remain independent in their homes. Staff can assist clients with activities of daily living. We are looking for employees to work 25+ hours per week. All ages are welcome to apply (over 18 years). These jobs provide great supplemental retirement in- come (full and part-time positions available).

 

Annual “Market Place of Ideas” at MOF

WALSENBURG — MoF’s Annual “Market Place of Ideas” and “Made in Walsenburg” Artists/Crafts people Sale and Demonstrations will be held Saturday, November 10, 1 to 6 pm at the Museum, Main and 6th Street.

Please join us to buy locally made art, photographs, hats, scarves, all hand made items. Artists and Craftspeople will be demonstrating how they create their unique items and be available to answer questions about their process. Help us to celebrate all the unique and creative Huerfano County makers who continue to add to our lives with beauty, talent, ideas and products. Huerfano County non-profit organizations are invited to share what they do and discuss how the community can get involved with their projects.

Santa will bring in the holiday cheer with hot apple cider, hot chocolate, cookies and other home made goodies. Bring your children for a photo op and we will email you the image. Spanish Peaks Alpine Alliance annual meeting and movie premier

LA VETA — Spanish Peaks Alpine Alliance (SPAA) will be holding its annual meeting and special event Saturday, November 10, 6 pm at the La Veta Mercantile. $10 gets you ad- mission, snacks and a 2019 SPAA membership. The featured attraction will be the premier showing in Southern Colorado of “Abandoned”, a Colorado film created by The Road West Traveled. The movie is about abandoned ski areas of Colorado and features Cuchara Mountain among other areas. It includes interviews of people from our area who once worked at the ski area. Come and watch for locals you might recognize! All are welcome!

21st Annual Gift of Art Show at SPACe

LA VETA — Everyone is invited to the opening reception for the 21st Annual Gift of Art Show this Saturday, Nov. 10, 5 – 7 pm at the Spanish Peaks Arts Council Gallery in the Park in La Veta.

Enjoy artful conversations, yummy refreshments, and the peaceful music of Russel Austin, while contemplating original artwork by 20 area artists. Trinidad artists Henrietta Butler, Gordon Lucero, Linn Baker, and Louise Clapp, as well as Denver artists Pat Newell and Diane Lather Belfour are showing collections of their work in the Fuller Gallery along with 14 artists in the Main Gallery.

Artists have chosen to offer works that would make great gifts. In addition, the Gift Shop offers fabulous jewelry, out- standing pottery, photography, cards, prints and original paintings, all made by SPACe members. SPACe is open Tues. & Thurs. 11 – 3 and Sat. 10 – 4.

Veterans Day Dinner

WALSENBURG — American Legion Post 16/Auxiliary Unit 16 in Walsenburg is sponsoring a free Dinner on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, 5 to 7 pm at Eagles Hall, 614 Main Street. All Veterans and their families are invited to attend the dinner. The menu will consist of Pulled Pork sandwiches or Beef Brisket with Potato Salad and Beans as sides. This year the meal will be provided by Sid’s High Country BBQ of La Veta. Door prizes will be given out, one free ticket will be given to each veteran, thereafter tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5. The American Legion is celebrating 100 years as a Post along with the 100th year anniversary of the end of WW1. Come on down and celebrate Veterans Day with Post 16 and other members of the Armed Forces!

LA VETA — Elijah Tindall, stunt double for Johnny Depp, will be in La Veta on Sunday, November 11, 6 pm at the La Veta Mercantile, 300 Main Street. This event is hosted by The Feed Store Church of La Veta.

PPACG Area Agency on Aging – Medicare Information/One-on-One counseling

WALSENBURG — The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging is pleased to announce a Medicare counselor will be in Walsenburg this open enrollment period as part of our outreach effort to rural communities on Monday, November 12, by appointment only from 9 am until 4 pm with a SHIP counselor in Walsenburg (Huerfano County Community Center – 928 Russell).

PPACG Area Agency on Aging Senior Insurance Assistance is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

office providing insurance counseling and education for Huerfano and Las Animas counties. The SHIP program can be reached through the statewide toll-free number (888) 696-7213. Senior Insurance Assistance (SHIP) does not sell or endorse any insurance, but serves as advocates for those over 60 and those on Medicare.

We can educate and assist with the following: Understand basic Medicare Benefits – A, B and D, Part D plan review & comparison, Medicare appeals, Low Income Subsidy, and Medicare Savings Plan (MSP). Other senior insurance options like: Medigaps/Supplements, Medicare Advantage Plans, or Employer Group Plans.

Mobile Vet Center in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG — The Pueblo Mobile Vet Center will be in Walsenburg Tues., November 13, 10 am to 2 pm at the Huerfano County Community Center. Vet center staff will be on hand to provide information about Vet Center services and other resources that may benefit veterans in the area.

 

Free legal clinic at Spanish Peaks Library

WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the SECOND TUESDAY of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library at 415 Walsen Avenue in Walsenburg. The next date for the clinic is Tuesday, November 13.

By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and everyone will be helped on a first- come, first-served basis.

The final 2018 clinic is December 11.

 

Huerfano County Republicans Meet on Tuesday, November 13

Huerfano County Republicans will be meeting at the La Plaza Inn at 6 pm on Tuesday, November 13. Please come and be a part of the “plan, do, review” of Tuesday’s election results. We will be having a meet and greet at 5:30 pm, meeting at 6 pm, then a no-host dinner at the La Plaza Inn after the meeting. We’ll see you there.

WALSENBURG — Vendors wanted for the Holly Jolly Boutique scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25 at the Fox Theatre, 715 Main Street. Booths cost $10 for a 10 x 10 space. Wobbly Mine Strike presentation at La Veta Library

LA VETA — The La Veta Library will host Nicholas Bernhard Thursday, November 15, 2 pm as he presents a program on the Wobbly Mine Strike. In 1927, the front range of Colorado was dominated by coal mining immigrants who worked long hours for meager pay, horrific accidents were a fact of life, and freedom of speech was limited. Finally they reached their breaking point and went on strike. Mr. Bernhard will cover the origins of the strike and the shocking climax at the Columbine Mine. Huerfano County Coat Drive on now

WALSENBURG — The Huerfano County Department of Social Services will be accepting donations of coats, hats, gloves and winter sweaters that are new or gently used for children and adults through Friday, November 16. CVCCS Thanksgiving service and Christmas Basket food drive kickoff

LA VETA — The Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services is sponsoring a Thanksgiving service Friday Nov. 16, 6pm at La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S Main Street.

The purpose of the service is to kick off the non-perishable and non-expired food drive for Christmas Baskets (for families in need in the Cuchara Valley.). Please consider giving some- thing you like to eat for your Christmas Dinner. The food drive will run from November 16 through December 16 at participating churches and vendors in the Cuchara Valley. St. Mary Catholic Church float assembly for Parade of Lights

WALSENBURG — St. Mary Catholic Church will be entering the 29th Annual Holiday parade of Lights scheduled for Friday November 23, 7 pm. Please join us for our float assembly at the school district bus barn starting Friday, November 16, 6 to 8 pm and Sat. and Sun. November 17 &18, 2 to 6 pm. A Taste of Huerfano County celebration

WALSENBURG — The Early Learning Center is hosting the 1st Taste of Huerfano County fall harvest celebration Saturday, November 17, 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Washington Underground. Local restaurants and organizations will be on site with samples of local food and information. The cost is $5 for ages 13 and up, $1 for 5-13 years and children under 5 are free. LA VETA — This holiday season, do something nice for some- one who is special to you and help grow the La Veta Library’s children’s book collection! Community Thanksgiving Dinner

WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth is host- ing it’s annual FREE Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. The dinner will be held at the Eagle’s Hall on Monday, No- vember 19. The meal will begin at 5 pm, and we will serve the community till 7 pm. A traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be served, and community members can get their meal to go, if necessary. Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth wants to thank the communities of Huerfano County for their continued sup- port and participation in the life journeys of the youth of Huerfano. WALSENBURG — The Walsenburg Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #1187 invites everyone to join us for the Annual Parade of Lights scheduled for Friday, November 23. New Hope Reunion Feast

WALSENBURG — New Hope Community Church of Walsenburg invites those who have attended or visited the church or the legacy church, Calvary Baptist, to visit once again at a special event. The New Hope Reunion Feast will feature a $1 dinner plate of pulled pork BBQ and sides. The dinner will be Saturday, December 1, 6 pm in the church fellowship hall at 801 Pennsylvania. There is no program other than time to meet new people and connect with old friends.

 

La Veta Annual Holiday Arts Fund Raiser

LA VETA — Each December since 2008 the La Veta arts community has held an end of year culinary fund raising event. The first three years the funds went toward the Spanish Peaks Arts Council’s (SPACe) building expansion. Those inaugural events were so successful and well received that this fund raiser has continued and now the funds raised pay for the Hwy 160 “Art Galleries” signs, provide art scholarships to lo- cals and supplemental funds for La Veta youth-oriented art activities, e.g. Fridays for Fun (put on by the La Veta School of the Arts) and SPACe’s Children’s and Teen’s Art Workshops.

In honor of the tenth anniversary of this worthy, fun and delicious event, the funding beneficiaries have been expanded to include the La Veta Public Library’s Scary Story Contest, the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts (FCPA) Theater and the recently formed FCPA Show Choir.

The event is on Saturday, December 1 from 5 to 7:30pm. Beth Evans of the Shalawalla Gallery produced the colorful poster and tickets; as she has done so graciously and creatively for the past several years. The six participating venues are: La Veta Gallery on Main, SPACe, Funky Monkey Art Space, Shalawalla Gallery & Gift Shop, La Veta School of the Arts, and Silvershoe.

As a new and special treat, the FCPA Show Choir will pro- vide Christmas caroling during this year’s event. The 2018 theme is: Yuletide Holidays around the World – a culinary celebration. Each venue will provide some type of food and refreshment to ticket holders. The La Veta Gallery on Main, in keeping with longstanding tradition, will provide a selection of desserts. The other locations will provide taster or small plate offerings along with a liquid refreshment. Each venue will also be holding a drawing for a prize of their choosing. All ticket holders will be entered in the master drawing for an adult art scholarship with an estimated value of at least $100. The master drawing will be held that evening at the La Veta Gallery on Main. Tickets are $25 each and are now available for purchase at the participating venues. Come stroll among six La Veta art galleries, enjoying a variety of delicious dishes from around the world, as well as an exceptional variety of artwork while contributing to local art programs and scholarships for both adults and children.

What’s going on at the WU?

WALSENBURG — Washington Underground has many active living programs geared for people of all ages. Adult Co-ed Basketball is every Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30 pm in the gym. Get off the couch and join the fun!

Boot Camp with Michael Reynolds is every Tuesday night at Washington Underground from 5:30-6:30 pm. No experience needed, just the desire to get fit! Yoga is offered three times a week at Washington Underground: Tuesday & Thursday at noon and Friday night at 5:15pm. Senior Exercise is Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 10am in the Washington Under- ground Gym. Increase your activity with this fun class for ages 60+. Come to any of these programs or just drop by and use the equipment in the weight room.

 

Two Peaks Fitness offers basic self defense training and power fitness

LA VETA — Power Fitness is now offered every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 am at Two Peaks Fitness, 216 S Main St. This class focuses on a workout using a mix of cardio, light boxing, and weight lifting.b For more information call 719-742-3555.

Starting Wednesday, November 7 and taught by a mixed martial arts champion. Stay in shape and have some fun! This new class is held Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at the La Veta Schools old school gym. Resuming Tuesday, November 6 come learn how to protect yourself and position your body in case you are attacked. Taught by a certified instructor in mixed martial arts, this class is now held every Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the La Veta Schools old school gym.

 

Ancestors Exhibition at MOF

WALSENBURG — This exhibition has been planned to ac- knowledge those who have passed and the people left behind who cope with loss. Loss is part of all of our shared experience. However this past summer in Huerfano County the effects of the Spring Creek fire and its aftermath are still coloring our lives. This was more than most of us were prepared to cope with and for many of us art is the way to express how its ire is still being felt.

In respect to those whose lives were changed by the fire, the Museum of Friends has invited artists to create new instal- lations to explore mourning, loss or memory of the power of their ancestors.

The exhibit includes works by Walsenburg’s own Ray Espinoza (now resident of Denver,) Dianne Hanisch, Lorraine Andreatta, Harold Vargas, Irene Grilley, and artists from many other parts of country: Ily Reiling, Nai’a Lewis, Liz Whitney Quizard. Works include: sculptures, wall assemblages, sound and audio installations, paintings and many unique combines.

 

Storytime explorers at La Veta Library

LA VETA — La Veta Public Library is a proud recipient of the “Reading is Fundamental Award” for Best Public Library 2018 by Winnie Family Favorites: the Best Places for Kids by Parents! LVPL is proud to have been chosen and offer our since- rest thanks to our loyal patrons! We continue to offer exceptional children’s programming, including Storytime Explorers for our toddler age group! Join us Wednesday mornings at 10 am for storytime and playtime (snacks provided). We are also proud to participate in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which promotes early childhood literacy by sending our participants FREE books! City seeking volunteers for historic preservation board

WALSENBURG — The City of Walsenburg is seeking two additional volunteers to serve on a Historical Preservation Board authorized with the approval of Ordinance 1067 establishing a Certified Local Government. The five member board is charged with developing criteria for the review and designation of historic resources, review and determine qualifications for properties for designation as either an historic structure, site, or districts, conduct surveys of potential historic sites or properties and then develop and assist with public education programs that relates specifically to historical preservation.

The two board positions will serve a four year term. Meetings are conducted a minimum of four times a year but may meet more frequently to fulfill the responsibilities of the board.

Some specific requirements that individuals must meet to be considered for appointment by City Council include professional background and or property/business ownership. Two of the five members shall be professionals in preservation related disciplines such as, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural history, archaeology, history, planning, American studies, American civilization, cultural geography or cultural anthropology. Two members will be “stakeholders”. A “stake-holder” is a person who owns property or a business within the municipal limits of the City of Walsenburg. There is an opportunity for an interested person to serve in an at large capacity if they do not meet “stakeholder” or professional requirements. Members do not have to live within the City limits.

Citizens interested in serving on the Historic Preservation Board can pick up applications and an outline of board responsibilities and requirements by contacting the City Clerk. Applications with a letter of interest must be returned to City Hall by Monday, December 3. Applicants will be reviewed with recommendations on membership submitted to the City Council for approval at the council meeting scheduled for early January.

TRINIDAD — Get your pets spayed or neutered at the Max-Fund mobile clinic Wednesday, November 7 to Saturday, November 9 at Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association. TRINIDAD — The Las Animas/Huerfano County Health Department will host a free workshop on the use of Nalazone Friday, November 9, 12 pm & 5 pm at LAC Health Department, 412 Benedicta Avenue. Nalaxone, given as a nasal spray, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save a life. Get free naloxone and learn how to use it. Basic French lessons at THM

TRINIDAD — Friday mornings, 9 am Trinidad History Museum hosts basic language lessons for students in grades 1-8. Using games and other activities, the objective is for students to have a basic foundation for the language and develop skills for future language-learning.

The cost for attending the morning sessions only is $9, with scholarships available. The all-day rate, which includes the morning language lessons plus additional afternoon activities, lessons, and lunch is $12.

Organ Concert at Trinidad United Methodist Church

TRINIDAD — There will be an organ concert celebrating the newly restored historic pipe organ Friday, November 9, 7 pm at Trinidad United Methodist Church, 216 Broom Street. The concert features Alan Dominicci who began his organ studies in Colorado while in Junior High. After graduating from High School, he went to Paris, France as an exchange student in a french Lycee, where he studied for 2 years to obtain his Baccalaureat in Philosophy and Literature. During his time in Paris, he also had the opportunity to study organ with famed French organists Jean-Jacques Grunenwald, André Marchal and Jean Langlais. He had the opportunity to play numerous organs throughout France, including the great organ at the Church of St. Sulpice.

Upon his return to Colorado, he completed an undergraduate degree in Organ at the University of Colorado and an MBA at the University of Denver. He has published writings on the organ works of Grunenwald and was invited to per- form recitals in Paris of his organ music, including two differ- ent recitals at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. He currently resides in San Diego and performs occasional recitals at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral there.

America Recycles Day Sponsored by Trinidad Tech Shop

TRINIDAD — America Recycles Day was started in 1997 by the National Recycling Coalition and is declared each year by Presidential Proclamation, encouraging Americans to commit to recycling. Since 2009, this day has been a program of Keep America Beautiful.

The Trinidad Tech Shop has pledged to do our part in responsibly recycling end of life electronics and refurbishing useful gadgets for our community and those around us. Please drop off your unused home or business electronics during this event, Thursday, November 15 11 am – 7 pm, at Trini- dad Tech Shop, 200 Elm Street. We make sure your e-waste is processed correctly. This event is FREE OF CHARGE.

Last year we recycled about 200 lbs of electronics during our event. Since then our business has grown and we recycle that much or more regularly. We hope to make a much larger impact this year with the help of the community.

Trinidad Historical Society fall dinner

TRINIDAD — Friday, November 16, at TSJC the Trinidad Historical Society will hold its annual Fall Dinner. Dinner is $15 per person. The deadline for reservations is November 8. The program for the evening will feature the historic “Trinidad Opera House Block” which was built in 1882 on the southwest corner of Main and Commercial Streets. You will hear about some of the places that did business there, see photographs from as early as the 1880s. Join us for an up-to-date photo tour and see some of the fascinating interior details that have survived.

The 136 year old building, now empty, has been deteriorating for years and is possibly in danger of being destroyed. The Trinidad Historical Society would like to share with you its concerns that this vital piece of Trinidad’s history should not be demolished.

The program will be held in the Pioneer Room of the Sullivan Student Center at Trinidad State Junior College. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. Plan to arrive at 6 pm. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm, followed by the program.

RATON — The Old Pass Gallery is preparing for the “old Pass Christmas” show (Think Small – Nice Christmas Gifts! All en- tries must be original works (painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography and textile). Old Pass Gallery will accept up to 10 pieces of artwork on Wednesday and Thursday November 7 & 8, from 10 am to 4 pm. The entry fee for this show is $5 per piece or $2.50 if you are an Artist Member.

Bayou Seco student program at the Shuler Theater

RATON — Bayou Seco Music comes to the Shuler for a student show Friday, November 9, 9 am. This program is part of the Shuler Theater for Shortgrass School Programs. The public is invited. Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company 33rd season kick- ing off 20th year!

ALBUQUERQUE — This November, Yjastros will kick-off a 20th year anniversary celebration, commemorating over 50 choreographic works by over 30 Spanish and United States choreographers. Highlights of the 20th year celebration in- clude a collaboration with Spanish choreographer Daniel Doña and the orchestra of New Spain in January of 2019, on- going community events, and in-depth looks at the creative process. Tom Vail art show in Pueblo

PUEBLO — Huerfano County visual artist, Tom Vail, has a retrospective show of his work at The Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo now through November 11. The show is entitled “Going Out of Business”.

Roughly 90 pieces of Vail’s art will be on display including films that he produced dating back to the late 1960’s. Fine photography, collage, animated GIF collage and some unexpected interactive components comprise the show.
