Stuffed Animal Sleepover at Spanish Peaks Library
WALSENBURG — February is Library Lover’s Month! Join us for a “Stuffed Animal Sleepover” for children in preschool through 3rd grade sponsored by GFWC Walsenburg Woman’s Club on Thursday, February 21, 5 pm to Friday, February 22, 9 am at Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Avenue.
Wear your pajamas and bring your stuffed animal to the library for story time. The animals will spend the night in the library enjoying reading. Parents please stay and enjoy the stories with your children. Library policy requires that small children are accompanied by an adult.

Two Peaks One Book programs kick off at La Veta Library
LA vETA — The La Veta Library is proud to kick off this year’s highly anticipated” Two Peaks/One Book” Series with some exciting events. This year’s chosen book is “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver and our theme is “How Communities Cope with Change”. For our first presentation. we will host Dr. David Westmoreland, PHD and Patty Kryzanowski from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs who will share their opinions and discuss Climate Change. Dr.Westmoreland has presented this talk to many people including the Dali Lama. The program is free of charge and will take place in the meeting room at LVPL on Sunday February 24, 2 pm.
The next segment will be on Thursday, February 28, also a 2 pm and it will be a moderated book discussion of the fascinating selection “Flight Behavior”. The Rifters at the Mercantile
LA vETA — The Rifters will play at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S Main Street, Friday, March 1, 7 to 9 pm. The Rifters formed in 2002 in the fertile and creative music scene of Taos, New Mexico from members of two popular bands already active in the area. Jim Bradley and Don Richmond of Hired Hands, and Rod Taylor of the Rounders, who had all known one another for years playing in the acoustic dance-oriented Americana music scene of northern New Mexico, decided to join forces to form The Rifters. Putting out more music than it seems should be right for three guys on stage, the Rifters employ a wide range of acoustic and electric instruments, combined with soaring three-part harmonies, to provide a mesmerizing variety of music from driving blue-grama-grass to ethereal desert beauty. Flood Preparedness Meeting at the Fox
WALSENBURG — A community Flood Preparedness meeting for Walsenburg will be held on March 6, 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Fox Theater. The meeting is open to the public and everyone in Walsenburg is encouraged to attend. County and City officials will be presenting invaluable information to increase awareness of the potential impact of flooding here in Walsenburg.
Larry Sanders, Huerfano County Emergency Manager, will be providing background information about the potential for a serious flooding event resulting from the Spring Fire. John Galusha, Huerfano County Administrator, will be providing information on what is currently being done to mitigate the situation and prepare for a wide range of possible scenarios. City staff will be addressing steps the residents of Walsenburg can take to prepare and the importance of having a Home Emergency Plan.
Also to be discussed will be the City’s evacuation plan and re-entry procedures based on the salamander system. Everyone who resides in Walsenburg, or has property in the City is strongly encouraged to attend!

Karen Roybal: “Telling Nothing but the Truth”
TRiNiDAD — Join us for another installment of our Borderlands of Southern Colorado Lecture Series with Colorado College professor Karen Roybal Saturday, February 23, 6 pm at Trinidad History Museum.
In 1848 with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the Mexican-American War came to a close and Mexicanas/os in California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico were thrust into U.S. citizenship without the full benefits afforded to Anglo Americans. Their citizenship status was better categorized as de jure, not de facto. This lecture focuses on the Nuevomexicanas/os who were subjected to a new U.S. legal system through which they had to reestablish their position as property owners and navigate a second-class citizen- ship shaped by a racial hierarchy. Karen Roybal describes how the testimonios taken by the U.S. Surveyor General during land grant adjudication proceedings in the late 19th century also demonstrate the gendered terrain of the property court cases as Nuevomexicanas/os responded to a new legal system and its laws and customs.

Adult reading at the Carnegie
TRiNiDAD — The adult reading program is held each year during the first quarter. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories: The story of the universe. We will be taking this year’s theme quite literally, the core of the program will be a series of presentations highlighting astonishing discoveries about the world we live in. Also, we’ll be revisiting the very popular adult spelling bee, and we’ll feature a presentation on how to use the library’s powerful databases. Two science fiction movies will round out the program. Pick up a reading list for science and science fiction books available at the library.
The next program will be held on Friday, March 1, 5:30– 6:30 pm when we learn about “Deep Space: Distance is Time” which discusses how astronomers can look back towards the Big Bang.

Gunsmithing class for veterans at TSJC
TRiNiDAD — A free gunsmithing class for veterans is open to 10 students and will be offered July 15 – 19, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. This class is being offered to honorably- discharged military veterans or retirees and active-duty military personnel. This course will cover operational theory, disassembly and assembly, proper use of hand tools and precision measuring instruments, and an introduction to basic bench work of the Gunsmithing trade.
Consideration will be given to minor gun repair and the installation of firearm accessories. A brief study of Federal Firearm Law and record keeping will be included. Students should bring some type of project(s) to work on during lab times under the supervision of the instructor.
Applicants will need to provide a copy of their active mil- itary or retiree ID card or DD 214. Current Gunsmithing students or Gunsmithing alumni are not eligible for this class and is open only to first-time Gunsmithing students. Because the class is not offered for college credit, the GI Bill will not cover tools. Students will be responsible for providing their own tools/supplies.
The class is limited to 10 students on a first come, first-served basis. Residence hall rooms available for $120 for the week (check in July 14 and check out July 20). Sign up for big game hunting license at two NM libraries
RATON/SPRiNGER — Representatives of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will be at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library , 244 Cook Avenue, today, Thursday, February 21, 5 to 7 pm to aid anyone who wishes to enter the pub- lic drawing for big game hunting licenses on public lands. There will be two computers dedicated to entering those who are interested in obtaining a license. Both residents and non- residents of New Mexico may sign up. Come get professional help in signing up for this public drawing for hunting licenses!
The same program will be available Friday, February 22, 3 to 6 pm at the Fred Macaron Library 600 Colbert Avenue, Springer.
Child Find developmental screening
CiMARRON — Child Find is a free screening for children ages birth to five years old. This year’s Cimarron Child Find is scheduled for Friday, February 22, at Eagle Nest school gym from 8:30 to 10:30 am and at Cimarron High School -Special Education Office from 12 pm to 2 pm

Raton MainStreet balloon rally logo contest for middle/ high school students
RATON — We want your design for this year’s International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally logo! Winning logo will be used in advertisements, t-shirts, and pins. Submit your design to the Raton MainStreet Office, at 145 S. First Street no later than Friday, February 22. Entries must include the following wording somewhere in the design in order to be considered — “2019 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally” and “Raton, NM” Design requirements:
Design on a 5 inch x 5 inch square (Design can be any shape though!)

- Include student’s name, grade, and school (7th-12th grade students only)

Raton Cycling Club group ride
RATON — The next group ride of the Raton Cycling Club will be Saturday, February 23, 12 pm. The group will meet at Raton Aquatic center. We will travel up through Sugarite Canyon State Park and back. RATON — Old Pass Gallery will accept up to 5 pieces of art- work on Wednesday and Thursday, February 27 & 28, from 10am to 4pm. The show is “The Art of NM Women” which includes art from women in the surrounding area also! The entry fee for this show is $10 per piece or $5 if you are an Artist Member. Raton Cycling Club announces mountain bike ride at Sugarite
RATON — Raton Cycling Club is having a mountain bike ride in Sugarite Canyon State Park in celebration of National Trails day, Saturday June 1. A 12 mile mountain bike ride will start at the visitors center, go north on the Lake to Lake trail to L. Maloya. From there, we will proceed to Opportunity and Ponderosa ridge trails around Little Horse Mesa, then back down Lake to Lake trail to the visitors center. Folks that are not up to the full ride could jump off at various locations or simply turn around. Wee need to get this event out there so folks can plan ahead. Boulder Bassoon Quartet performs in Westcliffe
WESTCLiFFE — A concert by the Boulder Bassoon Quartet, sponsored by Classical Music in the Valley, will be held Sunday, March 3, 2 pm at the Historic Jones Theater, 119 Main Street. Since 2006, the Boulder Bassoon Quartet has impressed a wide audience through substantive, engaging performances. At home in a variety of venues, the Quartet is dedicated to ex- panding the repertoire for the bassoon quartet in a variety of genres through new arrangements and original compositions.

Journey into the past at Bent’s Old Fort
LA JUNTA — The National Park Service is offering an opportunity for individuals to “step back in time” and experience life as it might have been 170 years ago at a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail.
On Saturday, March 16 the fort will host “Frontier Skills Day.” This one-day experience will allow adults to experience fur trade life of the 1840s. Participants will perform “hands on” activities in roles as traders, domestics, hunters/trappers, carpenters, and blacksmiths.
Activities might include learning Indian Sign Language, frontier cooking, using 19th century hand tools, animal pack- ing, or beaver trapping depending on which role you occupy. Open slots for this experience are limited as some roles have already been filled. Currently openings remain in all categories.
Pre-registration is required for this event, which will run from 9 am to 4 pm on that Saturday. Cost to attend is $20 which includes supplies and materials for living history activities and a period meal. This event will focus on the cross-cultural relationships found at the fort in the 1840s as participants experience life as it was in the past. You are invited to join us to take a step back in time at Bent’s Old Fort.
