33rd annual calendar open house at First National Bank

WALseNBuRg/TRINIDAD/RATON — Come join all three First National Bank branches Friday, December 7, 9 am to 3 pm for the 33rd annual open house reception and historic collectors’ series calendar distribution. This year’s calendar celebrates newspapers of the area during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Branch addresses are: Trinidad – 100 E. Main Street; Walsenburg – 135 W. 6th Street; Raton – 1247 S. 2nd Street.

 

First National Bank Santa’s Gift Tree concludes Dec. 14

TRINIDAD/WALseNBuRg — Join First National Bank in Trinidad in their annual North Pole Gift Tree program, beginning Monday, November 19, and concluding Friday, December 14.

Every year, over 250 local senior citizens write letters to Santa, which are hung on trees in First National Bank’s Walsenburg, 135 W. 6th and Trinidad, 100 E Main Street locations. Pick a letter from the tree on display in the bank lobby and fulfill the request (maximum $25 value). Bring your wrapped gift back by Friday, December 14. For info call 846-9881.

Free holiday decoration class today

WALseNBuRg — A Holiday Decoration Making program will be held today, Thursday, December 6, 5:30 to 6:45 pm at 926 Russell. This fun, family friendly class is presented by Chrystal Burhans. An RSVP is required, the class has a ten person limit. Learn how to make handmade decorations for the holidays using everyday objects. Come down and get some glitter on your hands! All materials provided.

WALseNBuRg — The Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Women’s Hospital Auxillary is having a garage sale on Friday, December 7 and 14, 10 am to 2 pm at the hospital gift shop.

 

VFC and Dorcas Circle Food Drive

WALseNBuRg — Dorcas Circle food bank, along with Volunteers for Community, will be collecting shelf stable goods and personal care items on Friday, December 7, 1 to 5 pm at

Arts and Crafts sale in La Veta

LA VeTA — A very special Arts and Crafts show will be held Saturday, December 8 at the Mercantile,300 S. Main, from 10- 3. Many favorite artists and crafts people from the area will be featured along with a few exciting new faces. Santa will be there at 1 pm and there will be a special shopping area just for kids. Warm clothing collection event

LA VeTA — One Nation Walking Together, a Colorado non- profit, will be collecting new warm things (mittens, scarves, hats) particularly for children and elders at the La Veta Arts and Crafts Festival Saturday, December 8 at the La Veta Mercantile. Gifts suitable for children are also appreciated. Cash donations help with purchasing much needed hygiene items and with the delivery of goods over a seven state area. LA VeTA — Calling local authors: The La Veta Library is inviting local authors to be part of holiday festivities by sponsoring a book signing and sale to coincide with the Art and Craft Sale and the La Veta Mercantile on Saturday, December 8, 10 am to 3 pm. LA VeTA — La Veta Village is offering free gift wrapping at La Veta Village, 109 E. Francisco St. Volunteers will be there to help with your wrapping needs. Veterans Day/Pearl Harbor Day Dinner

WALseNBuRg — American Legion Post 16/Auxiliary Unit 16 in Walsenburg is sponsoring a free Dinner for Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day on Saturday, December 8, 1 to 4 pm at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main Street. The Veterans Day dinner was cancelled on November 11 due to weather conditions. All Veterans and their families are invited to attend the dinner. Menu will consist of Pulled Pork sandwiches or Beef Brisket with Potato Salad and Beans as sides. This year the meal will be provided by Sid’s High Country BBQ of La Veta. Door prizes will be given out, one free ticket will be given to each veteran thereafter tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5. The American Legion is celebrating 100 years as a Post along with the 100th year anniversary of the end of WW1 and also Pearl Harbor Day. Come on down and celebrate with Post 16 and other members of the Armed Forces!

 

Navajo 2018 Christmas dinner/ party

LA VeTA — The 2018 Navajo Ranch HOA party will be held Saturday, December 8, 6 pm at the La Veta Community Center, 131 East Ryus Avenue (east of Post Office). All property owners, renters, as well as your guests, are invited to attend. The HOA will provide turkey & ham – attendees are to bring potluck dishes to fill in the meal.

There will be live entertainment at 6:30 pm featuring Marvin Thiel, a John Denver/Elvis tribute artist, an ugly Christmas sweater contest, door prizes, including 32”HD LED TV, gift certificates, and more!

South American trip featured at LVPL

LA VeTA — The LaVeta Library welcomes Irene Heikes and Sue Walker on Thursday, December 13, 2 pm as they share stories and photos from their recent adventure to South America. They hiked Machu Picchu and then traveled to the Galapagos Islands off of Ecuador and had a amazing time yachting, snorkeling and learning about the Inca culture. The Sangre De Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble, Huerfano County’s premiere intra-faith choir, presents: “Sing We Noel”, a beautiful Christmas cantata based on Celtic and Appalachian melodies. Friday, December 14, at 6:00 pm at St. Mary’s Church in Walsenburg; Saturday, December 15 at 6:00 pm at the La Veta United Methodist Church in La Veta; and Sunday, December 16, at 2:00 pm at the Methodist Church in Gardner. Enjoy cookies and cider after the concert to celebrate the yuletide spirit.

 

Flood mitigation volunteers needed!

LA VeTA — La Veta Trails has joined the Town of La Veta in flood mitigation efforts along the Cucharas River from the north town bridge along Highway 12 to the south town bridge along Highway 12. The Town will be coordinating with the National Resources Conservation Service to determine the scope of what will need to be done. Two hundred volunteers are needed in this effort. Volunteer work will begin in January 2019 continuing through next March and can include helping to remove debris from the river to serving food to volunteers. To learn more about this effort, plan to attend one of the two informational meetings scheduled for Friday, December 14, 11 am to 1 pm and Saturday, December 15, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Both meetings will be held at the La Veta Public Library.

Volunteer Sign-up Forms are available at the La Veta Public Library. The Library hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 10:00-7:00 and Friday-Saturday 10:00-5:30. The Library is closed on Sundays. TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Music Association and Holy Trinity Catholic Church presents Nine Les- sons and Carols, A Global Christmas Tradition, Thursday, December 6, 6:30 pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Enjoy the Trinidad Chamber Singers in this presentation which features the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus told in nine short Bible readings with the singing of carols interspersed.

Student art to be displayed at Trinidad State through Friday

TRINIDAD — Trinidad State will feature another President’s Office Student Art Show from now through Friday, December 7. These are the works of students from the Art Appreciation Class taught by Ily Reiling. Reiling sent them out of the class- room to find beauty in their environment. The student artists started by taking a closer look at their surroundings. They then experimented with ways to convey those observations and create a cohesive series. This showcase consists of samples from this artistic investigation.

On December 10, the Fisher’s Peak Series by Paul Milosevich by go back up through the end of December. 2019 Calendars by Milosevich are still for sale in the President’s Office for $20 with the proceeds going to Trinidad State.

Christmas Workshop by SCFC TRINIDAD — A Christmas Workshop sponsored

by Southern Colorado Family Center will be held Saturday, December 8, 11 am at Southern Colorado Coal Miners Memorial, 101 N Convent Street.

5th Annual Shop with a Cop

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Police Department is continuing their annual Shop with a Cop event from now through December 25 and want to make it bigger and better. We are seeking kindhearted individuals and businesses to sponsor local children. Sponsors will receive a receipt for their donation and a photo of after the event.

Last year we were able to make Christmas better for over 100 kids. Each child was paired with an officer at breakfast, rode the Trinidad Trolley, and was also given $100 to spend as they wished. Many spent their money on family members and essentials like jackets and shoes for themselves. Each year more children in our community need assistance, especially during the holidays.

ROAR Christmas Party

TRINIDAD — Family, friends, neighbors, co- workers, and all cancer survivors are invited to the ROAR Christmas Party Monday, December 10, 6 to 8 pm at Corradino Auto Body & Radiator, 126 N Maple Street.

The annual ROAR for Relay for Life Christmas Party is for Las Animas and Huerfano Counties. Guests are invited to bring a main, side, or dessert dish item.

HULA meeting

TRINIDAD — The next Huerfano-Las Animas Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council meeting will take place Wednesday, December 12, 1 pm at the Las Animas County Health Department, 412 Benedicta Avenue.

We will discuss the council goals based upon four domains: Health, social/emotional health, early care and family support and education. The meeting is open to the public.

 

AARP Smart Driver Course TRINIDAD — The new four hour refresher course

from AARP Driver Safety will be offered at the Fishers Peak Senior Center, 1222 San Pedro Ave. Thursday, December 13, 9 am to 1 pm. Learn valuable defensive driving skills, stay current with new rules of the road, the latest driving technologies and much more. Drivers 55 years and older will get multi year discounts on their auto insurance. Course tuition is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non members. Mt. Carmel Youth Choir Concert

TRINIDAD — The youth choir is ready to perform their seasonal, holiday set for the community Thursday, December 13, 7 pm at Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community Center, 911 Robinson Avenue. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served after the concert. There is no admission charge.

TRINIDAD — Meet the Trinidad History Museum’s December to February Artist-in-Residence, Ashley St. Lawrence, Friday, December 14, 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Museum, 120 S Chestnut Street.

Moonlit Ugly Sweater Christmas Hike at Trinidad Lake State Park

TRINIDAD — Be sure to wear your ugliest Christmas sweater for the ugly sweater hike Saturday, December 15, 5 to 7 pm! Join the Friends of Trinidad Lake State Park for hot chocolate, treats, a fire, and prizes including a Frog Hollow broom!

Meet at the amphitheater and enjoy some hot chocolate around the fire while we award prizes before heading out on the hike. Dress warm and in layers, we will be hiking a one mile loop.

This event is free to the public. All vehicles must have a daily or annual Park pass. Trinidad Lake State Park is located at 32610 CO 12.

 

Old-Fashioned Christmas at SCRT

TRINIDAD — SCRT and the Trinidad Community Chorale proudly present the 2nd Annual “Old-Fashioned Christmas” Saturday, December 15, 6:30 to 8 pm. The Chorale will again be singing favorite Christmas songs and leading the audience in singing Christmas carols. After the singing has concluded, a “Special Guest” will arrive and be available for photos. Kids of all ages are welcome!

Christmas goodies will be available at the SCRT concession stand. While the performance is free, donations are greatly appreciated to help cover the production costs. Doors open at 6 pm. Last year, every seat was filled, so come early to make sure you get a seat! The Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre (SCRT) is found at 131 W Main Street.

 

Cajun Christmas gumbo lunch & auction

TRINIDAD — Bruce & Christianne will provide Cajun gumbo and entertainment Sunday December 16, 12 to 3 pm at Fishers Peak Community Church, 10377 Santa Fe Trail. Everyone else get out your Christmas dessert recipes and bring desserts for the silent auction. All monies from the dessert auction will go to our Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

Raton’s Winter Wonderland Main- Street attraction

RATON — Winter Wonderland is a Raton tradition that was a labor of love by Mr. Virgil Buscarini. In 2017 he donated it to Raton MainStreet so that the tradition would live on for years to come. We will be open every Friday and Saturday from 6-8 pm through December 29. Please come visit this special dis- play and help us honor Mr. Buscarini.

 

Volunteer drivers needed for veteran transport from Raton to Albuquerque

ALBuQueRQue — Volunteer van drivers are needed for veteran patient transportation from Raton to the New Mexico VA Hospital in Albuquerque. Volunteer drivers are needed for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday shifts and would cover all trips to and from the Raton/Southern Colorado area. Celebrate Hanukkah in Raton

RATON — Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 540 Rio Grande. The first of the 8 days of Hanukkah will be on Sunday, December 2 beginning at 6 pm. Temple Aaron in Trinidad is unable to host this happy celebration so the traveling feast will be venturing over the pass to alight in Raton. Everyone is invited to attend this event that commemorates the miracle of the lamps. After a victory over the Syrian Greek Army, the Jewish people needed to light the temple for eight days but there was only enough oil for one day – miraculously the oil lasted for eight days! Each day of Hanukkah another candle is lit representing the eight days of the miracle until the Menorah is full and the light fills the room. Sunday, December 2 is the first day of the eight days of blessing and will culminate on Monday, December 10. Raton Retired School Employees Christmas Party

RATON — The Raton Retired School Employees Christmas Party will be Tuesday, December 11, 11:30 am at Casa Lemus. We will order off the menu. All guests are welcome. Please bring a toy to be donated to Toys for Tots. A meeting will follow to discuss the upcoming 2019 State Convention to be held in Raton.

 

Angel Tree gifts must be returned by December 13

sPRINgeR — Angel trees are up for Colfax General Long- term Care Facility Residents (at Sportman’s Crossroads Gas Station) and for Springer Elementary children (at Best Care Pharmacy). Cards can be picked up now. Purchased items should be returned to these locations no later than Thursday, December 13.

 

Christmas Carol at the Shuler

RATON — The Christmas Carol is returning to The Shuler Theater beginning Thursday, December 13, 7 pm (with three other performances, Friday, December 14, 7 pm; Saturday, December 15, 7 pm; and Sunday, December 16 2 pm.) Come see the traditional Christmas story come to life with the story of Tiny Tim and Christmas Carols that we all love.

Tickets are available at the door the day of the performance. Ticket prices are $10 per person, $30 for a family, and $5 IF the person comes dressed in traditional Victorian/Dickensian costume. Bring your whole family to this budget friendly event and support our talented local actors.

 

Christmas Open House ~FNB New Mexico

RATON — Come to the FNB open house Friday, December 14, 10 am to 5 pm. FNB New Mexico is located at 1104 S 2nd Street. Bring a new unwrapped gift to donate to Toys for Tots and receive an extra drawing ticket! Santa, refreshments, ugly sweater contest, drawings, Ms Unger’s Piano Students will play 3 to 5 pm.

 

Toys for Tots donations and volunteers needed to wrap

RATON — The Raton Fire Department is accepting NEW un- wrapped toys or monetary gift donations for the Annual TOYS for TOTS. Please bring your toy gift or cash donations to: Fire Station 1 at 127 Clark Ave from 8 am to 5 pm; Fire Station 2 at 200 Troy Ave from 8 am to 8 pm; FNB New Mexico at 1104 S. 2nd; International Bank (main branch) at 200 S. 2nd; Phil Long Ford of Raton at 223 S 2nd; or Enchanted Grounds at 111 Park Ave. To sign up children ages 0 to 18 years old in order to receive a gift – go to Valle del Sol at 101 Letton Dr. or call 575-383-2065.

If you would like to volunteer to help wrap gifts the Fire Department will be wrapping gifts on Saturday, December 15 downstairs at the Raton Convention Center starting at 9 am until all the gifts are wrapped. Delivery of the gifts will be December 20 through the 23 to the homes of children.

Personnel will be out collecting toys and monetary donations at Super Save Grocery Store on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 am until 7 pm. Please drop by and support a great cause.

 

Light Parade and Holiday Home judging in Springer

sPRINgeR — The Springer Light Parade will be Saturday, December 15. The lineup starts at 5:30 pm in front of Colfax General L.T. Care Facility. The actual parade starts at 6 pm. Prizes will be awarded for 1st ($75), 2nd ($50), and 3rd ($25) places!

The Holiday Home Lighting Contest entrants will be judged following the parade. Prizes will be awarded for 1st ($75), 2nd ($50), and 3rd ($25) places.

To enter the parade or the lighting contest, please pick up forms at either City Hall or Sportsman’s Crossroads or Alta Convenience stores.

 

Christmas on the Chicorica at Sugarite Canyon State Park

RATON — The Christmas on the Chicorica luminaria event will be Saturday, December 15, from 5-8 pm at the Sugarite Canyon State Park Visitor Center. There will be 1000 luminarias, hot drinks and treats, plus star gazing by telescope, and Santa! For more information call 575-445-5607.

 

Movie night at the Rec Center
