Expanding Quality in Infant & Toddler Care (EQIT) 2019 course

trinidAd — Huerfano– Las Animas (HuLA) Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council,Trinidad State Jr. College (TSJC), Division of Child Care, and the Colorado Office of Early Childhood & Department of Human Services present the 2019 EQIT course. The purpose of this FREE training is designed to expand the knowledge and skills of early childhood professionals, including teachers, assistant teachers, family child care providers, parents and grandparents with up to date information towards high quality childcare.

Successful completion of the EQIT course meets the Divi- sion of Child Care Licensing Infant Toddler training course requirements. Topics to be covered include:

The class will begin on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 6 to 9pm at SCCOG Early Learning Center, 1225 Rosita Ave, Trinidad, CO. This is a 16 week course. In addition to course work, it is highly recommended for students to receive at least two hours of coaching related to the course modules.

Shades Of The Southwest youth art show call for artists

rAton — Shades of the Southwest is a Northeastern New Mexico – Southeastern Colorado Youth Art Show which runs from Tuesday, January 8 to Monday,January 28 at Old Pass Art Gallery, 145 South First Street.

Submissions are due by 2 pm Saturday, January 5 at the historic Old Pass Gallery. Each school (Elementary, Middle, and High School) is invited to submit up to 8 pieces of Art for the entire show. Media Categories include : 1. Graphite, Colored Pencil, Pen and ink, Charcoal; 2. Oil, Acrylic, Water Color, Pastel; 3. Ceramic, Sculpture, Mixed Media The age divisions are: Kindergarden-2nd Grade, 3 rd-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade (Middle School), 9th-12th Grade (High School)

There is NO theme for the show. All art is welcome. Art is to be matted and framed and hang ready. Frames can be store bought or fabricated. (Framing is worth 10 points on the judges score sheet). Submissions must be accompanied with the artist’s name, media, grade, school’s name and contact info and art teacher’s name.

Each Age Division within each Media Category will be judged by independent judges (3) and a First Place, Second Place and Third Place will be awarded for each Age Division within each Media Category. A $50 Best in Show will be awarded for each Age Group and $100 People’s Choice will be awarded for the entire show.

The show will be at the Old Pass Art Gallery. There will be a reception on Friday, January 11th, 2019 from 3-5pm. Artists will have the options to sell their art if they like.

Christmas Bird Count, La Veta

lA vetA — The 30th annual Spanish Peaks Christmas Bird Count sponsored by the Arkansas Valley Audubon Society will be held Saturday, December 22, 8 am at La Veta Town Park. Regardless of experience with birding, everyone is welcomed. Bird as long as you wish. Dress warmly, bring binoculars and enjoy the camaraderie of other for this free event. The Cody Sisters experience blends old time, swing, gypsy jazz, jazz, folk, and modern Bluegrass together in a completely unique sound that stays with their audiences for weeks to come. Hope Was Born Christmas service at The Feed Store Church

LA VETA — The Monte Vista Campus Performing Arts Team will be performing song, dance, puppetry, and drama Sunday, December 23, 6 to 8 pm during a Feed Store Church Sunday evening service at  the La Veta 4-H barn,  401-499 Moore Ave, La Veta, CO 81055 Cocoa and cookies will be served after the performance. There is no admission charge.

 

Spanish Peaks Catholic Community Holiday Mass Schedule

wAlsenBUrg/AgUilAr/lA vetA — Christmas Eve, December 24, an 8 pm Vigil Mass will be held in Aguilar.

Join the Spanish Peaks Catholic Community for Christmas Carols in Walsenburg at 11:30 pm, followed by Mass at mid- night.

Christmas Day, December 25, Mass in La Veta will be at 8am; Mass in Walsenburg at 10:30 am. To celebrate the Feast of St. Stephen, a Mass will be held December 26 at 5 pm.

On New Year’s Eve, December 31, at 6 pm, there will be Mass in Walsenburg. On New Year’s Day, January 1, Mass will be at 8 am Walsenburg, then in Gardner at 10:30 am.

 

TC’S annual Christmas Dinner

“Jestifiable Homicide” at the Timbers

CUCHArA — The Francisco Center for the Performing Arts and the Timbers Restaurant invite you to join the fun trying to solve a “Jestifiable Homicide”, an audience interactive dinner theatre evening, Friday and Saturday, December 28 and 29, 7 pm. Broadband fund comment period open until December 31

HUerFAno CoUnty — Help Support Broadband Expansion up Highway 12 to the Cuchara Area. Huerfano County, together with Blanca Communications, is applying for a grant to expand broadband (high speed internet via fiber) up High- way 12 to Cuchara.

Comments to support the grant are being requested. The more comments the better chance of getting the grant. You could provide reasons such as economic growth, the economic downturn from the Spring Fire, or the need for broadband as it is unavailable from CenturyLink.

Please take the time to submit a comment. Go to https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dora-broadband- fund/apps-received to view the applications or use the online form to submit comments. The application number is 2018-3.

Comments may also be submitted by email to Jordan.beezley@state.co.us or by mail to Broadband Fund Department of Regulatory Agencies, 1560 Broadway, Denver CO 80202. All comments must be received on or before Monday, December 31. Submissions received after this date will not be considered by the Broadband Deployment Board. 7th Annual First Day Hike and First Day Run at Trinidad Lake State Park

trinidAd — The Friends of Trinidad Lake State Park will meet on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1 for the 7th annual First Day Hike. Meet at the Amphitheater at 10:30 am for hot cocoa and treats around the fire before heading out on the one-mile Levsa loop.

There will also be a run at 7:30 am for early birds. Both events are free to the public for all ages. All vehicles must have a valid park pass.

Raton Christmas Bird Count

rAton — Our new event is the Raton Christmas Bird Count, happening all day on Saturday, December 29! The Audubon Society has been sponsoring this tradition of more than 100 years. This count will include Raton and nearby areas including Sugarite Canyon State Park. Volunteering can be as simple as watching birds at your home feeder, or as active as hiking a trail. Volunteers need to call Scott Chalmers here at Sugarite (445-5607) in advance to be sure folks are assigned appropriately and that the birds are counted as accurately as possible. Only those who call to sign up in advance will be able to participate in the official count. (This is partly to make sure the same birds aren’t counted more than once.)

 

Raton’s Winter Wonderland MainStreet attraction

rAton — Winter Wonderland is a Raton tradition that was a labor of love by Mr. Virgil Buscarini. In 2017 he donated it to Raton MainStreet so that the tradition would live on for years to come. We will be open every Friday and Saturday from 6-8 pm through December 29. Please come visit this special dis- play and help us honor Mr. Buscarini.

 

New Year’s Eve Party at Raton Regional Aquatic Center

rAton — Come swim in the New Year Monday, December 31, 9 pm to 1 am. $5 admission fee applies. This party is a partnership between Colfax County DWI and Raton Parks and Rec- reation. Once you leave, you will not be allowed to re-enter.

 

New Year’s Day 5K at Philmont

CiMArron — Walk or run the New Year’s day 5K! Bring the family and friends Tuesday, January 1, 9 am at Philmont Scout Ranch, 47 Caballo Road. Meet at the Welcome Center.

 

First Day Hike at Sugarite Canyon State Park

rAton — Join a ranger for an easy to moderate walk on the Lake to Lake Trail for our annual First Day Hike, Tuesday, January 1, 11 am to 12:15 pm. Bring water, warm clothes, and sturdy shoes.

Stay after the hike to indulge in the Polar Bear Plunge! at Lake Maloya at 1 pm. Take the plunge, then warm up with hot drinks and doughnuts!

 

Raton’s Polar Bear Plunge

rAton — Do you have what it takes to take the “Plunge”? Come out Tuesday, January 1, 1 pm to the Lake Maloya South Boat Ramp at Sugarite Canyon State Park. Mark it off your bucket list and JUMP into an icy lake at 7,509 ft elevation! Or just watch the plungers and sip some hot cocoa. It’s fun for the whole family on New Year’s Day.

Snow/weather permitting, other activities to precede the Plunge ie. snow bowling, ice-skating, sledding, robbing the snow bank, etc.

There is a $20 registration to make the plunge (made payable to the Friends of Sugarite). If there is no ice the boat dock will be put back in and participants will jump from the side of the dock into the lake then exit up the boat ramp.

 

CCWCD is seeking photos

rAton — Colfax County Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking pictures you may have of the Arbor Day seedlings we give out every year at International Bank and to the 3rd graders in Colfax County.

We are interested in seeing the growth from seedling to tree. The best picture will win a $50 gift card from Colfax SWCD. The deadline for submittal is July 1, 2019.

ElectriCritters Expands at Pueblo Zoo with more animals, free Santa photos

Exploring amateur radio

PUeBlo west — The Pueblo West Amateur Radio Club will conduct a General Class License Preparation Course on eight consecutive Thursday nights beginning on January 10, 2019 at the Pueblo West Fire Station #3, 729 East Gold, Pueblo West (corner of Gold and McCulloch). The course is open to Technician Class operators wishing to upgrade their FCC license, and to General Class Licensees wanting to review their knowledge of amateur radio procedures.

The sessions will run from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and will feature full coverage of principles involved in the FCC General Class examination through the use of Power Point presentations and a required textbook published by Ham Radio School.

Amateur radio has existed over 100 years as a hobby which appeals to a wide number of people with no age, class, ethic, socioeconomic, or educational barriers. It is a rewarding hobby that offers social, experimental, emergency communication, and community service involvement.

There is no charge for the course, but a $20 text book published by Hamradioschool.com is required. Contact Frank Dunn KBØFD at 719-406-0617 to register, to reserve the text, or for additional information on the course.
