Expanding Quality in Infant & Toddler Care (EQIT) 2019 course
trinidAd — Huerfano– Las Animas (HuLA) Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council,Trinidad State Jr. College (TSJC), Division of Child Care, and the Colorado Office of Early Childhood & Department of Human Services present the 2019 EQIT course. The purpose of this FREE training is designed to expand the knowledge and skills of early childhood professionals, including teachers, assistant teachers, family child care providers, parents and grandparents with up to date information towards high quality childcare.

The class will begin on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 6 to 9pm at SCCOG Early Learning Center, 1225 Rosita Ave, Trinidad, CO. This is a 16 week course. In addition to course work, it is highly recommended for students to receive at least two hours of coaching related to the course modules.

Shades Of The Southwest youth art show call for artists
rAton — Shades of the Southwest is a Northeastern New Mexico – Southeastern Colorado Youth Art Show which runs from Tuesday, January 8 to Monday,January 28 at Old Pass Art Gallery, 145 South First Street.
Submissions are due by 2 pm Saturday, January 5 at the historic Old Pass Gallery. Each school (Elementary, Middle, and High School) is invited to submit up to 8 pieces of Art for the entire show. Media Categories include : 1. Graphite, Colored Pencil, Pen and ink, Charcoal; 2. Oil, Acrylic, Water Color, Pastel; 3. Ceramic, Sculpture, Mixed Media The age divisions are: Kindergarden-2nd Grade, 3 rd-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade (Middle School), 9th-12th Grade (High School)
There is NO theme for the show. All art is welcome. Art is to be matted and framed and hang ready. Frames can be store bought or fabricated. (Framing is worth 10 points on the judges score sheet). Submissions must be accompanied with the artist’s name, media, grade, school’s name and contact info and art teacher’s name.
Each Age Division within each Media Category will be judged by independent judges (3) and a First Place, Second Place and Third Place will be awarded for each Age Division within each Media Category. A $50 Best in Show will be awarded for each Age Group and $100 People’s Choice will be awarded for the entire show.
The show will be at the Old Pass Art Gallery. There will be a reception on Friday, January 11th, 2019 from 3-5pm. Artists will have the options to sell their art if they like.

Broadband fund comment period open until December 31
HUerFAno CoUnty — Help Support Broadband Expansion up Highway 12 to the Cuchara Area. Huerfano County, together with Blanca Communications, is applying for a grant to expand broadband (high speed internet via fiber) up High- way 12 to Cuchara.
Comments to support the grant are being requested. The more comments the better chance of getting the grant. You could provide reasons such as economic growth, the economic downturn from the Spring Fire, or the need for broadband as it is unavailable from CenturyLink.

Raton Christmas Bird Count
rAton — Our new event is the Raton Christmas Bird Count, happening all day on Saturday, December 29! The Audubon Society has been sponsoring this tradition of more than 100 years. This count will include Raton and nearby areas including Sugarite Canyon State Park. Volunteering can be as simple as watching birds at your home feeder, or as active as hiking a trail. Volunteers need to call Scott Chalmers here at Sugarite (445-5607) in advance to be sure folks are assigned appropriately and that the birds are counted as accurately as possible. Only those who call to sign up in advance will be able to participate in the official count. (This is partly to make sure the same birds aren’t counted more than once.)
Raton’s Winter Wonderland MainStreet attraction
rAton — Winter Wonderland is a Raton tradition that was a labor of love by Mr. Virgil Buscarini. In 2017 he donated it to Raton MainStreet so that the tradition would live on for years to come. Stay after the hike to indulge in the Polar Bear Plunge! at Lake Maloya at 1 pm. Take the plunge, then warm up with hot drinks and doughnuts!
Raton’s Polar Bear Plunge
rAton — Do you have what it takes to take the “Plunge”? Come out Tuesday, January 1, 1 pm to the Lake Maloya South Boat Ramp at Sugarite Canyon State Park. Mark it off your bucket list and JUMP into an icy lake at 7,509 ft elevation! Or just watch the plungers and sip some hot cocoa. It’s fun for the whole family on New Year’s Day.
Snow/weather permitting, other activities to precede the Plunge ie. snow bowling, ice-skating, sledding, robbing the snow bank, etc.
There is a $20 registration to make the plunge (made payable to the Friends of Sugarite). If there is no ice the boat dock will be put back in and participants will jump from the side of the dock into the lake then exit up the boat ramp.
CCWCD is seeking photos
rAton — Colfax County Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking pictures you may have of the Arbor Day seedlings we give out every year at International Bank and to the 3rd graders in Colfax County.
We are interested in seeing the growth from seedling to tree. The best picture will win a $50 gift card from Colfax SWCD. The deadline for submittal is July 1, 2019.

Exploring amateur radio
PUeBlo west — The Pueblo West Amateur Radio Club will conduct a General Class License Preparation Course on eight consecutive Thursday nights beginning on January 10, 2019 at the Pueblo West Fire Station #3, 729 East Gold, Pueblo West (corner of Gold and McCulloch). The course is open to Technician Class operators wishing to upgrade their FCC license, and to General Class Licensees wanting to review their knowledge of amateur radio procedures.
The sessions will run from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and will feature full coverage of principles involved in the FCC General Class examination through the use of Power Point presentations and a required textbook published by Ham Radio School.
Amateur radio has existed over 100 years as a hobby which appeals to a wide number of people with no age, class, ethic, socioeconomic, or educational barriers. It is a rewarding hobby that offers social, experimental, emergency communication, and community service involvement.
